About

Ardis Designs is named for my grandmother, Ardis, who got me started working in clay.

One morning in Sedona when I was a girl, Ardis showed me how to dig red clay dirt out of the ground by the riverbed in a parking lot at Oak Creek Canyon.

We carted it home in a trash bag in the trunk of the car. Later that week, back in Tucson, she showed me how to sift the impurities out of the clay dirt and mix water into what was left. Then we sat on the porch steps and molded clay pieces that she baked in the oven that night.

At 10 I'd played with clay before, but I'd never felt like an artist before that day, and I'd never had the connection with clay that she gave me - the innate understanding of what it was as a natural object and how it could be manipulated.

Years later, as a young teenager, I remember spending summer afternoons standing outside by the side of the road with Ardis, leaning against her car sketching the mountain ranges. Tucson is a valley surrounded by four mountain ranges: the Santa Catalina Mountains to the north, the Rincon Mountains to the east, the Santa Rita Mountains to the south and the Tucson Mountains to the west. The distinct contours of each of those landscapes still the inspiration for much of my work.

Since she was part of the beginning of my identity as an artist, I wanted Ardis to have a place in the start of business as well.
