Inspired Art Without Limits
I began collecting fine art during work travel and vacations around the world in 1999 as a way to remember my experiences. Signed, etched prints by renowned abstract artists were my first pieces. Then I discovered blown and hot sculpted glass during a trip to Venice and Murano in 2007. In 2008, original monotype prints. What the pieces I collected all had in common were faces and or figures in abstract and/or expressionist styles. Much of my work is similar in style although I'm beginning to enjoy mixing in mid-century retro and art deco designs.
It was the monotype I bought in 2008 that encouraged me to take workshops at San Jose ICA and my passion for making art was born. I began creating digital paintings and making monotypes. Eventually I developed my first series of monotypes titled "Folie a Deux". Later I found I could use the excess ink left after my printing sessions to create designs on the table glass and hand press images onto vintage Japanese rice paper. My portfolio of contact prints began in 2009 as I worked primarily with Fanny Retsek to develop my skills.
At about the same time I felt a desire that became a need to recreate the Folie A Deux series of monotypes in another medium. I remembered my visit to Murano and my fascination with glass making. I consigned an artist to work with me to make glass sculptures to bring three dimensions to my monotype work. Treg Silkwood did the work in the hot shop at Bay Area Glass Institute and I hand etched images into the glass. And my portfolio of glass artwork was born. Since then I've taken fused glass and hot shop classes from Treg, Jon Yao and Johnathon Schmuck at BAGI. And today I have my own studio complete with monotype printing press, fused glass kiln and a variety of glass cold working equipment. I still do some of the heavier work at BAGI for glass and SJICA for monotypes and digital prints.
I have a website with an on-line gallery at http://artstreetsj.com. But I wanted something more personal and social. That brought me to Etsy. I enjoy seeing everyone's work here. That inspires me in my own work. I know figurative expressionist art is difficult to sell. But I need to create what comes from inside. What can I say? I see live people! And they tend to show up in my art. I hope you see and feel the passion and imagination that goes into my artwork. I enjoy sharing it with you and that in turn inspires me to keep working and creating new and exciting artwork.
Thank you for visiting my ArtStreet San Jose shop on Etsy!
