About

ART by VICTORIA SKYE opened on December 26, 2015

My transition to life as a working artist began quite accidentally.

A friend saw some random sketches I'd done and asked if I might draw a few characters for a sci-fi book they were working on. These were then seen by someone who asked me to do sketches for a children's book, and these ended up on the cover. Then I was asked about doing full page illustrations for a novel - then the sequel. By the time the second novel was published, I was being contacted by others wanting me to create something for them, and soon there was no going back. My tabletop grew into an entire room in order to accommodate my art and supplies.

Today, I work as an artist and writer full time, and few things feel better than receiving positive feedback for something I've created. Except for selling it, of course.

I hope you'll find something you like in my store.

Thanks for stopping by.

Shop policies

Thanks for shopping at Art by Victoria Skye! I'm happy to have you visit my store and hope you will you make it a favorite destination on Etsy.

Art by Victoria Skye offers original paintings, prints, illustrations, cover art, and e-books. My goal is to offer unique, quality items at an affordable price with excellent, friendly customer service.

The original artwork offered in my store today may be gone tomorrow, so there will be an ever-changing inventory to choose from. If the special piece you're looking for isn't here, contact me, and if possible, I will create it. And if you're looking for illustrations for your book or covert art - I can create those for you, too.

All art is created by me, Victoria Skye, in my Georgia studio. Most of the supplies I use are purchased during a weekly visit to my local art shop, and orders are shipped from the post office down the road.

Every artist has their own style, and the appeal of any artist's work, be it a painting, a movie, or a piece of music, is subjective. (George Washington, for instance, had his portrait painted dozens of times, but according to his biographers, intensely disliked many of the paintings that the public nonetheless embraced). I ask that you take a close look around my shop before ordering to ensure my particular style of art appeals to you. ---

My BUSINESS HOURS are Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm excluding holidays. I am usually in my studio during these times, and will respond to your messages as soon as possible.

At present, I ship to U.S. addresses only. However, if you are outside the U.S. and wish to make a purchase, please contact me via chat. (See my SHIPPING policies section). I will do my best to accommodate you

There are two types of products available in my store.
NON-CUSTOM ART - These are the finished paintings and sketches you see on my site. These are in my studio and available for immediate purchase.
CUSTOM ART - This is the personalized art I create especially for you.

While every effort is made to reflect the true color of the artwork in the representative photographs that appear on this site, the differences in color calibration on one's monitor, along with an individual's perception of color, may result in a slight difference between the photograph and the finished product.

Please read my REFUND, PAYMENT, CANCELLATION and SHIPPING policies before you place an order,

Contact me if you have any questions. I'd love to hear from you.

Thank you,

Victoria Skye

CANCELLATIONS - Request to cancel your order should be made as soon as possible. Orders will be refunded in full if the request is received within ONE BUSINESS DAY of order receipt. Once order is shipped, it can no longer be cancelled.

DAMAGES - It is relatively rare for a package to be damaged in transit, but it does happen - which is why your purchase is shipped insured. Should your package arrive with damaged contents, here is the process to get a refund.
1. Contact me ASAP! I will need IMAGES of the damaged package and damaged contents to process the insurance claim with USPS. Hold onto the damaged packaging and merchandise. (The post office might want to see them).

Shipping
At present, it is store policy to not ship canvas portraits internationally** due to costs. The standard 16x20 canvas, once fitted into an 18.5 x 24.5 x 5.5 box and weighing in at approximately 4 lbs, costs more than $70 to ship via the USPS at this writing (May 2018). That being said, if you are international and wish to assume these costs, or if you wish to purchase a print, please contact me via chat,
**Shipments to APO/FPO DPO boxes addressed to US military serving overseas are exempted from this policy, as these costs are the same as the domestic rate.

******************************

Non-Custom Orders:
Your order will be shipped as soon as possible once payment is processed, and when possible, via USPS Priority Mail, which provides domestic delivery throughout the U.S. in 1-3 business days, (though this is not guaranteed). All USPS Priority Mail Shipments are insured for $50.00 and tracking is provided.
Depending on the size of your shipment and your delivery location, it may be necessary to send via USPS Ground in order to keep shipping costs down.

If you wish to request a preferred shipping method (FedEx, UPS, overnight, etc.) you must do so before placing your order. Send me a message and i will do my best to accommodate you.

I will email shipping confirmation with tracking when your product ships.

Custom Orders:
The Custom Order shipping process is the same as above, except that your order will not be shipped immediately. On Custom orders, your package will be shipped as soon as possible after your review of the photographic image of the final painting or drawing. Usual turnaround time from receipt of order to shipment is less than two weeks.

Do bear in mind:
___If you order on a weekend or holiday, order processing and shipping may be delayed. Weather delays are also possible. (Recent flooding in S.C. and Texas delayed some shipments by over a week). So ORDER EARLY!
___If you have need of a RUSH shipment, or desire that your package be shipped other than by USPS, let me know. I will do what I can to accommodate you.
___Your artwork will be packaged commensurate to it's size, i.e. a 16x20 canvas painting will arrive in a 20x24 package. Make sure you have a safe, dry place to receive your package.

All orders are carefully packaged using recyclable materials whenever possible. Please recycle these materials.

PLEASE USE CARE WHEN OPENING YOUR PACKAGE SO AS TO PROTECT THE CONTENTS! The best method is to open one end carefully and slide the contents out. This will also protect the integrity of the packaging in case you need to make a return.

2. Upon receipt of your images showing the damages, I will process your refund.

LOST in TRANSIT - I ship a majority of orders via USPS 2 Day Priority Mail, tracked and insured, and it is a rare event when a package is not delivered in a timely manner, though not always in two business days. Weather delays, flight delays, mechanical issues, holidays, etc., may result in your package being delivered later than expected. The good news is that the majority of packages that may appear lost in transit do eventually make their way to the recipient.

Here are my policies for those that don't:
1. If your package is shown to have been DELIVERED to the shipping address supplied, but you did not receive it, then it was likely (a) marked as delivered by your local post office while still in transit, in which case you should hopefully receive on the following business day or two, (b) misdelivered (mistakenly left at a neighbor's address), or (c) stolen.

In the case of misdelivery or suspected theft, you should notify your local carrier and/or follow up with your local post office ASAP. Contact me for images/description of the missing package. Art by Victoria Skye IS UNABLE TO ISSUE A REFUND FOR ORDERS THE USPS SHOWS TO HAVE BEEN DELIVERED.

If you are concerned about the security of delivered packages at your place of residence, there are steps you can take before placing your order.
a. Have your packages delivered to your workplace or to the home of a friend that you trust.
b. Have packages sent with signature required.
c. If you know you will be away, arrange for a "Vacation Hold" on all packages and mail.

2, If your order is not shown by the USPS as DELIVERED within seven (7) business days (business days are Monday through Friday) of the date the shipment was due to arrive, contact me so I can open an investigation with the USPS. The USPS will not open a missing mail search until after seven (7) business days of expected date of delivery have passed. If the order is still not DELIVERED within (14) business days of the expected date of delivery, I WILL ISSUE A FULL REFUND INCLUDING SHIPPING COSTS.

CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

OIL AND ACRYLIC PAINTINGS

The most prevalent cause of damage to acrylic and oil paintings are inappropriate storage, displaying in areas with fluctuating temperatures and/or humidity, overexposure to light, and airborne dust and dirt. Whether of display or storage, keep environmental changes to a minimum.
Things to know:
•Keep your painting between 65 and 75º F, with a relative humidity between 40 and 55%.
•Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Indirect lighting is best.
•Don’t hang near air vents, air conditioners, or space heaters. Hanging above fireplaces should be done with care, as soot and extremes of heat are a danger here.
•Avoid using cloth or feather dusters. Dust with a soft artist’s brush.
•Store paintings upright between rigid dividers. Avoid basements, garages, and attics where temperatures may be extreme.

Oil Paintings
Oil paintings consist of pigments suspended in oil, and they continue to dry long after they are applied to canvas. The oil molecules expand as they are exposed to oxygen, hardening the paint surface and eventually cracking. If properly cared for, oil paintings can last for centuries. They should be kept clean and free of dust, but deep cleaning and other interventions are best done by a professional.
Things to know:
• Oil paintings will yellow over time. This should be considered unavoidable.
• Oil paintings are more likely to crack than other kinds of paint.
• Oil paintings will eventually flake due to the hardness of the material.
• Oil paintings can take up to a year or more to dry completely, and until fully dry are most susceptible to adverse environmental conditions.
• Varnish can be applied after the painting has completely dried. This should be done by a professional.
Should you choose to frame your oil painting, do not put it beneath glass. Also, oil paintings are usually not backed by more than a paper dust cover.

Acrylics
Acrylic paint is an emulsion that consists of an acrylic polymer resin suspended in water. It is a “quick-dry” paint, and is more susceptible to the buildup and retention of dust and dirt particles. Acrylics remain flexible as they dry, and are less susceptible to cracking and flaking.

Things to know:
• Acrylic paintings are well protected by framing them beneath protective glass. The glass should not touch the canvas. If you choose not to use a glass frame, avoid touching the painting, as fingerprints can cause damage and remain visible.

--------------------------
CARING FOR PASTELS
AVOID touching the surface of pastel artwork. Unlike paint, pastel does not dry and form a hard surface. The surface of a pastel work must be protected, as touch can brush the pastel "dust" off the paper. Pastels also smudge easily, and is not moisture proof. Therefore, pastel artwork should be protected under glass. Do not use Plexiglas or acrylic because it may build up a static charge when cleaned that may draw some of the particles of pastel off the paper and create a fine mist of dust inside the frame. When you frame your pastel, choose a frame that is deep enough to restrain the pastels from touching the glass.

Your original pastel will be professionally packaged for shipment to you with the surface isolated from any packing material to avoid damaging the image. It is recommended that you keep it protected in this packaging until ready to frame.

Pastels can be sprayed with a fixative to help hold it in place, but as these can darken the pigment, I do not use it.

Pastel artwork should be protected from jarring and not carried in a face-down position.

NEVER hang it in a location where it will receive strong light or direct sunlight. It could fade irreparably in a matter of months.

Pastel Drawings
Artist’s pastels consist of pigments that are blended with a binding material. This chemical composition leads to the creation of raised lines on a drawing’s base that must be protected when pastels are used.

Caring for Pastel
The advice to protect the surface of a drawing is paramount to maintaining the integrity of a pastel drawing. When storing these types of drawings, owners should be careful to never apply pressure between the drawing and other items, like acid - free tissue paper, because the pastel pigment might fuse with the other item.

----------------------------

Charcoal
Charcoal has been used since ancient times as a means to draw figures and scenes. It is created from charred wood and comes in both hard and soft varieties. Originally produced only in shades of black and grey, charcoal now comes in a variety of colors.

Caring for Charcoal Drawings
Charcoal is very easy to smudge, so an artist typically sprays a fixative over a charcoal drawing once it is finished. Collectors should be careful, however, when working with older charcoal drawings that may not have a fixative applied. It is not advisable to add a modern fixative to an antique charcoal drawing because the fixative could discolor the drawing’s paper. Instead, owners of antique charcoal drawings should handle them with care, making sure that the surface of the drawing has limited contact with other materials.

Graphite and Pencils
Graphite and pencils are popular mediums to use for drawings because they are easy to erase and are quite affordable. Graphite and pencil drawings are not as susceptible to smudging as many other drawing mediums are, but it is still a good idea to limit contact between the drawn surface and other materials, such as the glass in a picture frame.
