Prairie Art is the Mirror of Nature

I'm an artist and graphic designer living in the heartland and I am surrounded by our beautiful tallgrass prairie which inspires me everyday. My studio is located in Topeka, Kansas. I often paint from reference photos taken in the Flint Hills and surrounding area or en plein air.

I create heirloom paintings by using foraged rock, clay, and plants that I then turn into watercolor and hand-rolled pastel sticks. I turn the foraged items into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle, then I sieve the larger particulates out of it. Once the sediments or plants are ground, I use different processes to provide a permanent color for paper.

Most, but not all, of my paintings will contain sediment and plant collected on location. When you buy a painting from Artisan Prairie, you not only get a piece of the world around me as I see it, but you actually get a piece of the prairie as a keepsake.

I also make other items related to the prairie!

We make our own designs, but we don't make all of our own shirts. To keep our overhead low and bring you the lowest cost, we have teamed up with a product printer. Want made in the USA? Us, too, so don't sweat it! This company is based in Florida.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true to color?

Artisan Prairie photographs the artwork and other products in daylight white lighting to provide the most accurate view of the piece. The color and lightness of each item will vary slightly from monitor to monitor.

What if the item arrives damaged?

Artisan Prairie will advise that you contact the shipping service used if the item arrives damaged. Your items will be packed carefully for shipment, but I understand accidents happen. Since many of my items are originals, they cannot be recreated. Your experience in my shop from start to finish being a happy one is important to me, so contact me with any questions or concerns regarding any damaged item you received.

Custom and personalized orders

I am currently accepting commission work for custom mini-landscapes and larger pieces in watercolor from 2 in. x 4 in. up to 9 in. x 12 in. from your own photo. If you'd like your custom landscape to have an heirloom quality, you can mail me a small amount of sediment to turn into a watercolor. The way to tell if something will make a good watercolor pigment is to get a small stone wet and rub it on another surface. If it's rich in color, it may make an excellent natural watercolor paint. For clay or soil, it's not necessary to conduct a color test. Please message me if you have any interest and for more information about a custom landscape painting! All inquiries welcomed!
