Announcement   Although I have been working with the medium of ceramics since 1988, my most recent work using hand dug native clay of the Dingle Peninsula has been truly rewarding. I process the clay myself in small amounts in the West Kerry Gaeltacht, and then make these organic pots and fire them in my studio. These pieces are truly of the earth, rivers and hearth of Corca Dhuibhne nothing is added to the clay, and only a few stones are removed from it. The clay when harvested is already made fine from the flow of rivers through it. The organic shapes and glazes attempt to resonate with the surroundings where the clay was found. I hope you enjoy my work.

Well worth the money, the clay used is beautifully smooth and on par with Mumyoi-ware. Thank you very much for your excellent service!

These bowels have given me such pleasure, from the organic form to the colour and texture of the clay. They enhance the experience of eating food served in them from soup to desert.

About

Irish Ceramic Artist. Working with local clays from the Dingle Peninsula.

For the past two years, I have been concentrating on working with local clays. For me, it has been very interesting. I’m amazed by the fact that many of clays here fire straight from the ground to 1300 degrees centigrade. I feel I have only scratched the surface of exploring the abundance of materials in this area. I have begun the process of discovery by researching the geology of the area, the types of stone and ground underneath our feet.  I am examining the geological and scientific properties of the clay, and experimenting with how this clay can be worked with, fired and glazed.

I am interested in preserving the integrity and beauty of the natural material, without adding any other materials to it, or stripping it of it’s own. There are many challenges working with native clays, but I prefer to find a way to work with these clays, rather than change them by adding other materials. When I started this two years ago, it was with a view to getting some clays for wood-firing, and I hope to build a small wood-fired kiln this summer.
