Frequently asked questions
Can I order a custom oil painting?
Unfortunately, I had a stroke a few years ago, taking out my ability to use my right hand for detailed artwork. As I'm not an abstract artist, this has limited my abilities to create new oil paintings (and glass sculptures).
But, I am still able to produce Sand Sculptures, and am always working on a new one! While animals are my specialty, I can do landscapes and more!
How long does it take to complete a Sand Sculpture?
Since my sand sculptures are literally 100% sand built up layer upon layer, using a very thin water/glue mixture which must dry before the next layer is applied, the process can take a very long time. My smaller sculptures (approximately 8x10") usually take about a month, and my largest and most complex (22x28") took me a year to complete. Of course, subject matter, complexity of the scene, and depth of the semi-relief aspects of the sculpture should be taken into consideration.
Care instructions
You should always maintain any piece of art, regardless of medium, in a location that is not overly dry nor humid, and with not a lot of harsh sunlight. While my original artwork and prints are created using quality material that stands up better to poor conditions, great care should still be maintained to ensure your piece lasts.
Is the sand "painted" on the Sand Sculptures?
No! The often used term, "Sand Painting," is very inaccurate, as there is no "paint" or "painting" involved beyond brushing on the glue mixture between layers of sand to keep it all in place. The sand is naturally colored, meaning no paint or dyes are used, and is either purchased from Scenic Sand or collected from my travels around the world. My White is from Florida's Gulf Coast, Black from Mexico's beaches, Yellow from the country Jordan, Reds & Browns from the Painted Desert in Utah, Pink from Bermuda's beaches, and Tans from Virginia Beach. The final product can be quite the cultural piece taken from around the world!
Are the Sand Sculptures really all sand?
My Sand Sculptures consist completely of hundreds of layers of sand held together with a 40-to-60% water & Elmer’s glue mix, which I brush onto a Birch or Basswood Plywood base, or other wooden base, & each layer of sand thereafter. No moldings are used. Some portions of the sculpture can extend out a couple of inches from the board giving the piece quite a bit of dimension, but make this sort of work very time consuming as the glue mixture must be set before applying the next layer, and there are several hundred layers of sand composing each sculpture. On some pieces, gemstones are set into the sand for decoration.
What keeps the sand on the Sand Sculptures from falling off?
I use a 40-to-60% water and Elmer's glue mix between each of the several hundred layers of sand that compose a Sand Sculpture. While this in general holds the entire piece together, I ensure a more solid sculpture by applying a clear top-coat sealant to the finalized sculpture.
What if a piece of my Sand Sculpture breaks?
Life happens, as I know with my many military moves! If something minor should break off of your sculpture, please contact me to coordinate a repair!
