"At sunrise everything is luminous but not clear."-- Norman Maclean. I don't remember how I came across this painting, but I uttered a small, "Oh!" and put it on my wish list for better days. When they came, the painting had been sold. Here's the nub of it: I asked John if he could do it or something like it for me with some hesitance even though he invites one to have a custom piece..He responded genuinely that he would be pleased to and graciously showed me the work at an interim stage to make certain it was what I wanted. John is accessible and personable, and I would not hesitate to request a custom piece in the future. I love the size of these paintings. At these dimensions, the composition will draw you to come, step closer and visit. I am so thankful for this.

A luminous silver, and a perfectly beautiful complement to a stormy sky dressed in taupey-gray! And, as always, impeccably beautiful framing work by Mr. Shanabrook!

Thunder is such a lovely visceral menace in Mr. Shanabrook’s moody turbulent sky! A beautiful fright, that spectacular taupey-gray canopy of gathering clouds, churning in agitation and pressing upon us, and the lightning is its punctuation mark, a brilliant white flourish and nature’s dramatic illumination of its ferocity and turmoil and our frailty and inconsequence. And its voice is otherworldly and ancient, beginning as a low resonant rumble from deep within the breast of the storm-beast and, by degrees of proximity, builds from moans and guttural howling until, after the strike, it reaches a crescendo in a wall of noise like a passionate and bellicose “TA-DA”! And then it’s upon us, and its voice is brontide-like, meant to rattle our bones and shake our world. And so it does.
