Announcement    Thank you for visiting our Shop!

We usually have more tools in stock or in process than indicated. Send us a conversation if you have any questions about our stock. We try to reply ASAP.

We realize shipping costs are high. Since we are not a large company we have no control over the fees. There is no such thing as "free shipping". It is factored into the final cost one way or another--either by inflated pricing or by adding a separate line item. Some states don't tax shipping if it is a separate charge. We feel that keeping the prices of our tools as low as possible and basing shipping fees on the actual cost is the fairest method for both our customers and our shop.

Arrived quickly. This is an amazing tool. Exactly what I needed having a massive rock garden and multiple in ground brick and stone barriers for my gardens. VERY SHARP! Cuts grass roots and edges like a breeze. Slices out just below the surface or much deeper depending on how you use it. Gorgeous, sturdy, wonderful. Was so excited when I got it - ran out to the garden in my slippers (at least not in my PJs) to use it!!. I may get a left handed one also for my husband, but I can see being able to put a left handed one to use also. Thank you. Just great!

Arrived very quickly. More importantly - an amazing tool and a work of art. Have already used it. It is SHARP!! sturdy and comfortable. Perfect for hard rooty soil and tight places. I am sure my husband will love it for planting. I am completely satisfied with my purchase. Makes gardening a pleasure.

Care instructions

To remove surface rust that naturally forms on the steel, rub the metal with a wire brush, steel wool, or synthetic scrubby pad. Than apply a coating of oil, such as linseed oil, an oil based wood finish, or even cooking oil, to the steel.

Applying oil to the wood handle periodically will help keep it in good condition.

The sharp edges of the tools should be touched up when necessary with a good quality file. It is helpful to put the tool in a vise to steady it.

Process and Materials Used

Ashfield Tools are high quality garden tools handcrafted in W Mass. They are sturdy, sharp, long lasting and designed to enhance the garden experience.

Each tool is hand-forged with high-carbon tool steel using traditional blacksmith techniques. The blades of our hoes, plows, trowels, and viper weeders are made from 400 series cutlery grade stainless steel which will hold a sharp edge. During the forging process the surface blackens and loses some rust resistance. Any rust that forms will be superficial and can easily be removed with a wire brush or abrasive pad (see Care above).

Each tool is wire brushed and an oil finish is applied to both the steel surfaces and the wood handles.

The birch and ash handles are made in Maine.
