Announcement    We have decided to close our Etsy shop as of June 30. The last day to order Garden Tools will be June 20. We want to thank our wonderful customers and fans. Ned enjoyed making heirloom-quality tools for you over the last 10 years while in semi-retirement. Your response and thoughtful reviews are much appreciated.

We now want to step into the next phase of our lives without the same demands for producing tools. If you can track him down, you may still be able to convince Ned to make a garden tool or two for you. Meanwhile, our daughter, Clara, plans to start a YouTube channel this Fall, Family Forge, where viewers can watch her learn metalworking from her dad.

Our heartfelt thanks,
Ned and Marilynn

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

To remove surface rust that naturally forms on the steel, rub the metal with a wire brush, steel wool, or synthetic scrubby pad. Than apply a coating of oil, such as linseed oil, an oil based wood finish, or even cooking oil, to the steel.

Applying oil to the wood handle periodically will help keep it in good condition.

The sharp edges of the tools should be touched up when necessary with a good quality file. It is helpful to put the tool in a vise to steady it.

Process and Materials Used

Ashfield Tools are high quality garden tools handcrafted in W Mass. They are sturdy, sharp, long lasting and designed to enhance the garden experience.

Each tool is hand-forged with high-carbon tool steel using traditional blacksmith techniques. The blades of our hoes, plows, trowels, and viper weeders are made from 400 series cutlery grade stainless steel which will hold a sharp edge. During the forging process the surface blackens and loses some rust resistance. Any rust that forms will be superficial and can easily be removed with a wire brush or abrasive pad (see Care above).

Each tool is wire brushed and an oil finish is applied to both the steel surfaces and the wood handles.

The birch and ash handles are made in Maine.

We Stand Behind Our Tools

If our tools break for any reason, we will repair them or replace them.
