About AtelierSpatz

Sales 1,285
On Etsy since 2013
Video summary: Working on eight bespoke superhero costumes for a project with a children's hospital in 2018.

Welcome to Atelier Spatz!

Atelier Spatz started with Jo's own kids growing up with vintage costumes that had been in her family for generations. Missing from the seafarer's chest of costumes in her parents’ attic was a bird cape and so she made one. Since then, the bird capes have remained a signature costume, although she has now designed and sewn everything from snow queens, ringmasters and superheroes to fairies and pirate costumes.

Why Spatz?
"Spatz" is the German word for sparrow. In Southern Germany - where Jo is originally from - kids are often called "little sparrow" as a term of endearment by their mums.

When designing and testing costumes, Jo always strives to make them versatile, use mainly natural fibres and detail them as colourfully as a child's imagination. Patterns accommodate growing and active kids and have been tested on real little people. Her aim is to make high quality, handmade, durable, and unique costumes in an artisanal way. She use natural fabrics (preferably cottons, silk and linens) wherever possible, patterns have been developed to account for growing and active kids. And finally: it's all in the detail and each button counts.

Some of the items in the shop are ready to ship, while larger items are made-to-order. And if you can't find what you are looking for, then get in touch and commission something bespoke. All costumes are handmade in the UK and have been enjoyed by children worldwide.

Have a look at the Atelier Spatz facebook or instagram page to keep up-to-date with new creations and a sneak peek into the studio!

Frequently asked questions
Sizing details

All costumes are/can be made to measure. Sizing options within each listing refer to standard measures within each age group and have been tried and tested on actual children. They also work as a guide to estimate the amount of fabric needed to make the garment based on the standard measurements within each age group.

Please get in touch to provide the measurement of you child unless you want the garment to be made in standard measurements.

Custom and personalised orders

Nothing is more enjoyable than creating something for the very first time. Please don't hesitate to be in touch to commission a custom order of a garment or accessory.

Care instructions

I recommend all my costumes to be dry cleaned.

Some items can be spot cleaned, please contact me if you need instructions.

Pirates: Shirts and Trousers are washable at 30C.

Bird Capes: They can be ironed. However, please be very careful and iron them only from the wrong side (the inside of the cape). If the cape gets creased during storage, hang it out (possibly in a steamy bathroom), then iron at low temperatures from the wrong side.

Superheroes: The cape and cuffs are made from pure cotton to ensure safety (low flammability) and durability for the kids. They do crease. You can iron them, but don't use steam or directly contact the metallic fabric.

Clown Collars: Those made from pure satin can be washed as delicates at 30C.
