About

Radioactive Rarities

The Atomic Hideaway started in 2010 when I was still in college. I was finding vintage sewing patterns, garments and accessories at garage sales and thrift shops that just weren't being loved and I wanted to put them in a place where they would find their true homes.

In June of 2010, my husband and I moved to Portland and I opened up a space at a local antique mall and much of my inventory here on Etsy shifted there with a few exceptions. Over time I noticed most of my Etsy sales were coming from vintage sewing patterns, so I decided to focus on that. In fall of 2014, The Atomic Hideaway made a complete shift to selling strictly on-line, as I closed my space at the Portland antique mall when we moved to Orange, California.

For patterns, I try to offer a wide array in both style and size so everyone can find their next project. Each pattern is checked for completeness, and notes are made regarding the condition (whether the pattern has been cut or not as well as presence of instructions). When the date is available, I add that too, so those seeking an exact period can find what they're looking for. I also enlist the help of two marvelous books, Blueprints of Fashion, for which there is a 1940s edition and a 1950s edition. These books have pattern numbers attached to dates. When a date is not present, but appears to be from the 40s or 50s, these books are referenced.

I especially love the patterns because they are a perfect window into the past for true inspiration for vintage fashion. And better yet, all of it is still within your reach! Ya just gotta make it! As a seamstress myself, I understand the fun and even addictive quality of patterns. I also understand the importance of having a complete pattern, which is why I always try to do my best to tell you just want you are getting with a pattern by mentioning whether or not a pattern has been cut, altered or is missing any pieces.

Shipping
When Will My Pattern be Shipped?
All items are shipped via USPS and shipped within 1-3 days of your purchase - unless otherwise noted (ex: I am on vacation).

Do I Get a Tracking Number?
All patterns being shipped within the US are given a tracking number. Some countries outside the US are given tracking numbers, depending upon the country. I do my shipping labels through Etsy.

I Don't See My Country Listed
If you are located outside of the US and the countries listed, please don't be afraid to send me a message with your country. I can look into how much shipping costs and let you know and if you remain interested I can add your country to the shipping options, allowing you to purchase.

What About Customs and Duty/Taxes?
All buyers are responsible for knowing the cost of importing an item from the US and then paying all applicable customs fees/duties/taxes when receiving their pattern. I will not alter a customs form to provide a lower price point. Additionally, I use Etsy for providing my shipping labels, which does not allow for alterations to custom forms.

How Will My Pattern Arrive?
All patterns are placed into a clear sleeve, along with a piece of cardboard to prevent the pattern from being further damaged by being bent or folded. Patterns of a certain age can suffer severe damage when bent or folded. The pattern is then wrapped in tissue paper. The pattern is in the placed with a packing slip into a padded envelope. Your pattern will arrive via USPS (or your country's postal service).

How Do You Calculate Your Shipping Cost?
Shipping prices are calculated based upon an average weight of a pattern when packed for shipping. Some patterns weigh 3 ounces, some weigh over 7, but most weigh about 4 to 5 ounces. A little extra is tacked on to cover shipping supplies (envelopes, tissue paper, etc.)

Can You Do a Rush Order?
Please let me know if you need your pattern rush delivered, so I can make an adjustment in pricing.

What about Insurance?
Insurance is not attached unless desired and asked of by the buyer.
Refunds and Exchanges
As these items are vintage, often 30 to 70 years old, all items and sold as-is. I cannot offer refunds for fitting problems, color discrepancies, or "buyer's remorse". Thus, all sales are final unless I have made significant and grave error in describing the item.

If an item is lost or damaged, a refund of half of the combined item price and shipping will be refunded.
Additional policies and FAQs
Use a Delicate Touch
Please remember that these patterns are 30 to 70 years old. They are made of paper, and the pieces are tissue paper. They are extremely fragile, and susceptible to tearing.

What Does Factory Fold Mean?
"Factory Fold" means two things. The first is that the pattern pieces have never been unfolded after they were originally placed in the envelope when the pattern was created. The second is that I have not checked patterns that I observe as Factory Fold for completeness.
