Where buyers and makers become students and teachers

Aula Artesana is a retail and learning space located in the heart of Cusco. We collaborate with artisans, communities, organizations and businesses in the highlands and jungles of Peru to build a unique, curated collection of handmade products.

Through these partnerships, we have developed group and custom hands-on workshops with master artisans in their communities, bringing together makers and art-lovers from around the world.

Aula hopes to facilitate opportunities for people of different backgrounds to come together to exchange experiences and learn about alternative perspectives through art and travel.

Shop members

  • Sonya & Steph

Aula was founded by Steph Guthridge and Sonya Radetsky in 2018, brought together through their love of the diverse artisanal products of Peru, as well as their shared values of ethical business practices, human engagement and collaboration.

Production partners

  • Ceramicists of Santo Tomás

    Iquitos, Peru

This black pottery is made by a few families in Peru’s northern jungle in Loreto, using traditional methods unique to those jungle communities. The clay is formed by mixing the white clay from the Amazon basin with the ash of the apacharama bark.

  • Community of Patacancha

    Cusco, Peru

Aula partners with a female weaving cooperative in Patacancha, a campesino, Quechua community situated in the mountains above the town of Ollantaytambo. The tradition of textile weaving there dates back generations, passed down from mothers and grandmothers to daughters and granddaughters.

  • Ese Eja

    Madre de Dios, Peru

Over generations, the women of the Indigenous community of Palma Real have developed their own method and style of basket-making. The tradition is unique to this community, where the weavers take great pride in the artistry they have created.

  • Guillermo Bacalla Cava

    Amazonas, Peru

Guillermo Bacalla Cava is a dedicated wood carver, creating beautiful pieces from bamboo and other local timbers.

  • Leidy Martinez & Family

    Pucallpa, Peru

These Shipibo ceramics are handmade by Leidy Martinez and her family, who come from the Shipibo-Konibo Indigenous group in the Peruvian Amazon. Dora Panduro, the family’s matriarch, was one of the best-known and widely recognized ceramic artists of this style.

  • Tiodoro & Juana Pacco

    Puno, Peru

Tiodoro and Juana Pacco have dedicated their lives to the creation of beautifully soft, hand-woven alpaca textiles. During the 2000s, Tiodoro and Juana decided to revive their ancestral practice of alpaca rearing along with their knowledge of natural dye plants and weaving.

Frequently asked questions
Are you fair trade?

Aula Artesana adheres to fair trade principles. We pay our partners the price they ask for and never negotiate, except when we feel that the proposed price is too low . To learn more, feel free to visit our values page or write to us with any specific questions or concerns.

Why these partners and the areas that Aula works in?

Aula works with people who are passionate about what they do, offer high-quality handmade products and want to share their knowledge and art. We are always interested in working with new partners across Peru who share our values. However, we are also conscious of biting off more than we can chew, so we prioritize strengthening and maintaining the relationships we already have.

Why only partners with existing goods to sell?

We believe that this is a sustainable model for both our partners and Aula. Our partners are passionate about their work, craft and art and are looking for retail and workshop opportunities, all of which Aula is keen to help facilitate.

How do you maintain relationships with your partners?

We maintain continual communication with our partners across Peru, visiting them regularly and in-person and meeting with the artisan associations, community members and leaders. Some of our partners are reachable by telephone, while others live in areas outside of phone service. In those cases, we schedule visits more frequently in order to keep up communication. Trains, planes, cars and canoes - we do whatever it takes to reach our partners!

How much is shipping?

Aula Artesana works with Serpost, the Peruvian postal service, in order to keep shipping rates as low as possible while still maintaining reliability and delivery speed. Items’ shipping cost depends on weight and dimension. Products with a shipping cost under $10 ship for free internationally!

How soon will I receive my package?

Typically packages shipped internationally will arrive in 15 to 21 business days. We provide tracking information so that you can keep an eye on your package as it goes along. You can find out more about our Shipping & Returns policy here.

Where is my package coming from?

All products are shipped from our shop and headquarters in Cusco, Peru.

What is Aula’s refund and exchange policy?

Because each piece is handmade and unique, we are unable to offer returns or exchanges. This policy also applies to damaged or lost items. You can find out more about our Shipping & Returns policy here.
