About

Handmade Vienna Bronze—vintage and new

Welcome to the Etsy home of original Vienna bronze. Our shop centers around the work of the late Walter Bosse and his animal menagerie. His black gold line of brass miniatures grew out of his work designed for pottery. By the 1950s, his work was sought after worldwide. We continue his legacy by producing his original designs in the present day with the same handmade quality and attention to detail.

VINTAGE ITEMS
On the vintage side, we collect the best examples of Austrian brass by Walter Bosse as well as Hagenauer, Herta Baller, and Aubock. Most of the vintage items in our shop are original deadstock or have been scavenged from collectors around the world.

HANDMADE ITEMS
All of our newly-made items are cast using the "lost wax" method from original molds and master patterns passed down through the decades by the original company craftspeople. We adhere to strict standards that were set by the original Viennese masters many years ago. In our modern workshop, all of the raw brass used in the creation of our Vienna bronzes is derived from recycled scrap from local brass manufacturing plants in Austria. Each item is painstakingly finished by hand, starting from the "tree" of raw castings. Each piece is cut from the tree, polished, patinated, marked, and then polished again to reveal the contrasting "black gold" finish that has been an Austrian tradition for most of the last century. A light coating of natural wax is added after finishing to protect the surface finish for years to come.
