Growing up Portuguese is one of the many great blessings God has given me. The food, the music, the traditions, the language, they are all beautiful to witness and enjoy. My mother was a minhota dancer, and my Vóvó often cooks us Portuguese dishes, takes us to Portugal Day in Newark, and attempts to teach me Portuguese. While they both speak Portuguese, I end up only knowing enough to make small conversation.
My first visit to Portugal was an eye-opener. The people, the connections, the deep history, architecture, and art, it’s all breathtaking and makes me yearn to return again and again. Saudade is the perfect word for it. When asked where I wanted to go for my high school graduation trip, I didn’t hesitate to say Portugal.
On this trip I was able to truly immerse myself in the culture. I had the chance to sit with local artisans in Olhão, learn about the tradition of tile-making, and create one myself. Portuguese tiles are everywhere, a hallmark of the country’s art and history. I made a tile of a fado guitar, and it felt completely natural, as if it was meant to be. I haven’t stopped creating tiles since.
Though I may not live in the country I love and adore, making tiles brings me back to places like Lisbon, Faro, and Ílhavo, where my family is from. Each piece is a connection to my roots and a celebration of the culture I hold dear and is something I want to share with others. My name is Brianna and I make mosaic tiles inspired by Portugal with a modern twist so others can enjoy them like I do! :)
