Announcement   WELCOME

Much of my work is CUSTOM - if you see something on social media that is not listed, feel free to contact me to set up custom order.

All items are handmade by me in my home studio (The Hive) in beautiful coastal Falmouth, Maine.

B.Hive Design has been an evolving business since I opened in 2009 on ETSY. My original concept was a business of one-of-a-kind handbags and totes, made from high-end home interior fabric remnants and discontinued fabric samples. I continue to make these bags and also added wedding party clutches. If the bag is one of a kind, it will be noted in the description.

There are other handbag and clutch makers on etsy, but not all of these are made the same. At BHive Design, I have developed methods to make my bags more substantial with additional interfacing and canvas liners.

My shop continues to offer custom items. I have many quality fabrics in stock by such designers as Schumacher, Quadrille, Alan Campbell, China Seas, Schumacher, Robert Allen, Osborne & Little, Lee Jofa and Schlamandre. My inspiration for anything I sew is simple - it is the piece of fabric I am about to work with. The shape, size and ultimate utility of the item is inspired by the textile.

B.HIVE DESIGN was on the red carpet at the SAG awards, 2015 on the arm of the actress Joanna Going of House of Cards. Ms. Going's bag was made from an Osborne & Little silk blend fabric. Check out the photos on my Facebook fan page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/BHive-Design/209517592391807.

Also, BHive Design was featured @kellyripahome on instagram with a clutch made in her "Make it Rain Fiesta" fabric.

I have made every possible effort to represent my products accurately. Subsequently, ALL SALES ARE FINAL. If there is an item you would like additional photographs of, please feel free to contact me and I would be happy to send additional photos. Also, if I still have the fabric, I am happy to send a swatch for color.

LOCAL CUSTOMERS IN PORTLAND, MAINE: If you buy through ETSY and we arrange for pick up, i will refund the shipping.

Thanks for visiting my shop!

About

BHive Design launches as small business after years of charity donations

My sewing interests have evolved with the stage of my life whether I am sewing work clothes, draperies or tote bags for my teen daughters. Over the years, I have made and donated numerous handbags, totes, belts, pillows, doll bed ensembles, skirts, scarves and baby blankets for charity auctions as a creative outlet and a way to give back to the community. I was frequently asked where someone could buy one of my handbags. I decided to take the plunge and what my daughter's called Barb's bags became BHive Design, a tribute to my childhood crafting with my sisters.

Ironically, when I first opened my etsy shop, my son was getting ready for his first deployment with the U.S. Army to Iraq for one year. My shop proved to have even greater meaning to me as I had this creative outlet as a distraction from my worry. I am happy to report that my son completed 2 deployments, was an army ranger instructor and now is in graduate school getting an MBA and is in the Army Reserves.

I have collected and continue to collect fabrics from a multitude of sources and the common feature is their high quality and rich colors. Many of my tapestries are made in Italy or France and I enjoy using high-end home decorator fabrics, many of which are remnants. I have learned that I am doing what is now known as "upcycling" taking remnants and workroom "waste", and turning them into beautiful one of a kind items. This shop continues to be a work in process.
