Bianca Russell first became artistically inclined as a child. She was the type of child who got in trouble for marking on everything. Even well past an age that would be considered appropriate for such behavior.

She went to summer camp when she was 4 that was themed around, “who we are and what we want to be when we grow up.” She wanted to be an artist. However, Russell ended up pursuing performance art instead. She’s been dancing professionally for the past three years for 3 awesome companies: Female Energy, The Levitations, and Ovations Productions. Only recently in the past year has she traced back to mediums other than her own body.

“I hope to evoke Peace, love, healing, and growth in most of my work. I love drawing portraits of people who I feel live for or embody those qualities. There is a womanly connection I’ve made with many women in my life, history, and even celebrities that have made an impactful print on the woman I am becoming and I hope to one day be. These paintings portray these women in an exchange with me (the bee) who will, one day, from all the wisdom, knowledge, and love acquired from these Queens...will be the “Queeniest”of Queens.”

Sometimes, Russell illustrates her own dreams. Tea has become a strong motif in her works.
“Mama always told me a cup of tea could cure anything. Stomach ache, head ache, heart break, broken leg, bad day....doesn’t really matter how bad it is “drink some tea, say a prayer, and go to bed” was usually her response. “
She likes to portray the moment right before the first sip. Right before all the "ick" goes away. Occasionally Russell will make works that bring awareness to current issues.

Although, Russell finds it quite difficult to verbally speak she thinks all art (poetry, visual, and performance) allows a voice for her to speak what otherwise may not have been spoken.

“That’s the beauty of art! One is free to interpret, love, or hate as they wish. I want my audience to see my art through they’re own eyes. Preview as they wish. I love hearing other perspectives.”

Art is Russell’s hobby, career, and ultimately a lifestyle. With its ups comes its downs. The biggest struggle with being an artist is money. Even though Russell does not like to use the term, “starving artist” at times it’s no exaggeration. She one day hopes to be in a position where she is consistently getting enough work or sales that she can fluently support her artistic endeavors.
“I’ve come a long way and I’m proud of myself. However, if I want to make this a career and be able to not just survive but live I’ve got some ways to go.”

For now Russell hopes to continue growing with the dance and performance companies she works for now. She hopes to put on a few art shows in the future. All in all this talented artist just wants to keep growing and inspiring others to do the same.
