About BJeppsonArt
The male form as theater
The human body has a sense of beauty and complexity that has fascinated and challenged artists for centuries. It is usually the female body, with its subtle sensuality, that is the subject of most artists. But the male body has an added layer of strength complicated by vulnerability.
The models are not professionals who spend hours at the gym honing their bodies for photo shoots. They are ordinary guys who have been convinced to pose: a student, a psychologist, a data analyst, an engineer, a janitor. They usually begin the sessions shy, self conscious, and unsure of what is expected of them. As they relax, they gain confidence and their inner selves begin to emerge. Capturing that evolution is the challenge.
As an artist with a theater design background, it seems natural to place models in settings that celebrate their form. When creating prints, the models are photographed and the shots are combined with other photographed and painted items to create richly-textured and layered works that are professionally printed on archival art papers. Snapshots of the models are used as reference for the paintings. The paintings are generally mixed media, primarily acrylics supplemented by collage, cutouts, stenciling, pen, and pencil.
