About

Nice things for Naughty things!

Bad kitten creations came about in the late 90s when I was making music and creating stop motion animation films (with a dark mythology and Art Deco inspired style).
Stop motion is both expensive and a huge time commitment but I fell in love with this old and unusual way of expressing my ideas.
If I wanted to really do it justice I had to change my life around it, so I quit my job and set up Bad Kitten Creations.

I have been drawing pin-up girls and fantasy characters since I was a child and have been in love with vintage fashions of the 30s and 40s for just as long. It all started from watching old movies with my Mum, and I will admit I became a little obsessed!.

Since then I have developed a style, for my self, my art and my home, that can be called Decopunk. It combines elements of the 20s, 30s and 40s with my Gothic/fantasy leanings. When I started doing this there was nothing much available that I liked so learned to make my own fashions, accessories and artwork.
I love that now I get to share what I learned, and am still learning, with other vintage lovers all over the world through my blog and my work.

The Bad Kitten Store here on Etsy was first set up in 2009. Back then I was selling some dolls I had made. But it would later become all about custom pinup portrait art.
By 2012 I was selling my pin-up girl artwork through various outlets but not really using Etsy much :-(
2014 changed that! This store is now expanded to include not only my Custom commission art, but also prints, original drawings, stickers, hand made items and more.
I work to create a range of prints and other art products featuring all kinds of pin-up girls ...... from classic vintage style to burlesque to Gothic to Art Deco!. But not just classic pinups....and not just the girls!!
I am always expanding, and will be adding more of my myth and fantasy inspired illustration work to the mix as well as a new collection of paper dolls coming soon.

I still especially enjoy the challenge of custom portraits because they have to perfectly reflect the fantasy spirit of someone else.

I will gladly offer refunds or exchanges in the following circumstances:

* If an order is canceled by the buyer (via Etsy convo is best) BEFORE the item is shipped, then a refund will be given of all monies paid. No reason is required in this instance.

* If an order is canceled by the buyer AFTER the item has been shipped but before the item is received. Then the refund can only be sent once I have received the returned item in as-sent condition. The cost of returning the item will not be refunded. You will understand that order cancellation after shipping is problematic, so please be sure of your purchase before you send payment.

If the item is "unfit"
* I take great care over the listing and the packaging of my items, to ensure you know what you are buying and receive your purchase in good condition. And I do not sell wet or breakable items.
However in the unlikely event that any of my items arrive damaged, I will offer a refund, payable on my receipt of the the returned item, return postage to be refunded also.

Remember that my hand made items will have natural variances, and that monitor colour display varies.

Item not received:
* From time to time it does happen that items are lost in the post, and in that case a refund or exchange (of equal value) will be offered. However to protect myself I always obtain proof of postage. In most cases it will be required to file a claim with the post office.

Change of heart:
* If you simply change your mind after receiving the item, you must contact me within one (1) week of delivery, and I will offer a refund of item purchase price only (not p&p) or exchange (of equal value) once I receive the returned item in perfect condition. In this situation return postage will not be refunded.
This option is not available on commission portraits, as design approval is obtained in advance. Design approval constitutes acceptance of the product. Custom items cannot be returned.

Please be sure of your purchase before you send payment. You can always contact me through etsy to discuss any questions or problems you may have.

Most items are made to order. I aim to ship all items (except commission items), properly packed, within 5 working days of payment received.
Commission items will be shipped within 5 working days of completion.
I ship out at least once per week.

Each listing has details of available shipping methods. If you have any questions about shipping options or if you have any special requirements, then please don't hesitate to contact me before sending payment.

* 'Special requirements' may be express shipping or perhaps gift wrapping and shipping to a giftee's address. I am happy to do this and will gift wrap your item free of charge.
Or extra postal insurance ($50 included as standard on most items, in USA), which can be applied at applicable cost on request.

For international orders buyers should be aware that customs fees may apply in your country. I cannot anticipate these fees and they are the responsibility of the buyer. I will not state that an item is a gift on customs forms to avoid such fees, so please do not ask. I can also not be held responsible for delays to delivery caused by customs searches or other such delays.

I always keep buyers of commission pieces regularly updated on the progress of their piece and it's shipping date.
Additional policies and FAQs
* Contact me through the Etsy convo function if you require any additional iformation about shipping, payment, refunds or exchanges. Or if you need more information about my items, including additional pictures if required.
You can also contact me in this way for custom commission work.

* All of my items come from a smoke free home. However I do have a cat and a dog and I cannot say that my items have never come in contact with them in some way, so buyers with allergies should bear this in mind before ordering.

Custom Portrait FAQ...
* How do I arrange a commission?
Contact me via my Etsy store and tell me what you are looking for. If I am able to take your commission I will ask you to provide pictures of yourself, or the subject of the portrait if it is a gift, for reference. I will then create a listing for you, or you can use the standard pinup Fantasy or portrait options in store.

* What pictures are best and how many?
Most important are pictures that clearly show the detail of the subject's face. Getting the face right is vital for a good fantasy or pin-up portrait to come alive!.
I usually ask for at least two pictures, ideally from different angles.
I store the images on my studio computer for the duration of the work, then they are deleted. I do not keep or distribute your images nor use them as reference for my other artworks.

* How much is a pinup portrait? and when is payment required?
The standard cost of a pin-up portrait is around $80. This is a hand drawn and digitally edited, custom pinup, against a white background (similar to the style of Vargas).
The cost of a pinup with a colored background and/or with large props (table/chair/motorcycle..) is around $100.
Larger or more complex pieces will be priced on a case by case basis.
Payment is required upfront for all custom work.
* What will I receive?
You receive the artwork printed, signed and hand finished on high quality presentation paper in one of two size options (max size 13" x 19"). This piece is ready to frame and does not come with a digital file.
Quality professional printing, on many materials and in almost any size, is available as an add-on for an additional cost.

*How involved must I be in the process?
You can be as involved as you want to be. You can leave the design up to me, or you can give detailed requests. Either way I will keep you up to date with your portrait's progress and give you the option to change or approve the design at every stage.
If you have chosen to be kept involved in the process (default), you will be sent concept sketches and progress pics for approval. If you do not respond to these messages it will delay the completion of your portrait. So do keep an eye on the convo thread.

*May I get the pinup art as a tattoo?
Yes feel free to! I would love to see it though so do send me a picture if you do!

* May I make copies of my portrait?
If it is for private personal use yes you may, your portrait is yours. However if you want to use the artwork for public/branding purposes you will require a custom listing so contact me in advance.
I do not currently accept requests for commercial work.
