Oh man does this shampoo bar know how to suds up! Most shampoo bars I've tried barely lather. This one makes my scalp less itchy (I have psoriasis) and leaves my hair clean feeling. I finish it off with an acv rinse. Good to go!

The History of Baltimore Bumble Crafts

Growing up, soap was something I had to suck on when I'd been naughty, so I never would have guessed that soap would become how I make my living. As a child, I dreamt of being a seamstress, then a basket weaver, then a crocheter, and finally a quilter. I wanted to make art that would last forever. Delusions of grandeur, eh?

None of those ever felt like a perfect fit. Perhaps I don't have the patience for timeless masterpieces or perhaps I just needed to get out of the chair and move more. Who knows. I still enjoy all of those crafts, but now I do them for me ... and if I happen to have way too many UFOs (unfinished objects), so be it.

Luckily, I met someone who actually made her own soap and it seemed like the best kind of magic. How in the world did she transform what were basically food ingredients into a bar of soap?! Soon enough, the magic was revealed to be science, but what a wonderful science!

What a dangerous science too! Lye burns are nasty, but it is worth the danger to know exactly what goes into my soap. I will never use a pre-made base for just that reason. Still, between the odd assortment of protective gear and the requisite goggles and gloves, I know I look like a mad scientist ... and I kind of like it. Despite being a part-time English professor, there is something about soap that brings out the elementary school science nerd in me.

The soaps I make are art, I've realized, just without the permanency I had envisioned as a child. In doing this, I've come to understand that there is something beautiful about the fleeting, about the subtle differences between one bar and the next, one batch and the next. And while I try to make each batch identical to the one before, I also know that there will always be surprises. I doubt I will ever get bored.

While I spent so much of my life flitting from craft to craft like a busy bumblebee, I've finally settled down. And I've done it in Baltimore -- the city that reads! By day, I'm a professor of English, so between all of this, I fixed on literature as the source of my product names. Each product tells a story and I want the names to reflect that.

And there you have it. My story (so far at least).

As for the nuts and bolts of it, I use as many organic ingredients as possible and strive to make the most natural, wholesome, and sustainable bath and body products. Why? Because I care about the planet and the people who live on it. And because I want to make sure that all the kids out there sucking on soap for their potty mouths are sucking on the best soap nature can create!

I like to picture myself as a bumble bee, flitting from craft to craft, picking up ideas and seeing how I can combine things in new ways! While I've settled down and gotten serious about soap, I still love to try out new techniques and new hobbies.
