About

Shoveling Up Wood Chips

Woodturning lathes make chips. Bandsaws create sawdust. Sanding creates fine particulates. About twice a year it takes a leaf blower to shift it all outside the garage for the wind to blow it far away. Then I make some more.

Each morning when I unlock and roll up the big garage door, it feels like something is just waiting to be made. There is an expectation of something truly excellent hiding there that needs to be discovered. Sometimes I can complete a project and hold it up to turn in the light, and feel pleased I've helped it along. Other times I know I missed the mark, and it will have to be attempted again.

The most rewarding times are when I can work all day uninterrupted, make satisfying progress, and lock up afterward thinking, 'That was a Good day's work.' Being retired now, I often forget what day of the week it is, but I don't forget where I am in a project. I always wake with the knowledge of that important next step, or a shift in the design opportunity.

It is hard to explain how heart-warming it is to be told a grand daughter was overheard saying, "My grandma is Cool. She Makes Things. Out of Wood!"
Life is good.
