About

Barb's Cottage: a small enterprise with a big heart

I started creating porcelain tiles and mosaic art in my cottage studio in the Texas Hill Country in 2008, while still teaching sociology at Texas State University in San Marcos. After I retired in 2011, my friend and neighbor, Christy Ferrara, joined me and Barb's Cottage really took off. Our products were picked up on consignment in more than 12 retail stores in the Austin/ San Marcos area. In 2012, Barb's Cottage on Etsy opened and is now our mainstay.

All of our work starts by making “tiles” from porcelain clay (we call them “cottage tiles”). Many of the tiles are shaped in molds, others are cut out of rolled clay with cookie cutters and stencils. After the tiles harden a few days, we paint them with under-glaze and fire them in the kiln to bisque stage. Each tile is then stained, glazed, and fired again to over 2300 degrees. The resulting cottage tiles take many shapes: flowers, animals, birds, and even cowboys. The tiles are then either listed on Etsy or used to make a variety of products: mosaic pots of various sizes, mosaic crosses, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, wine glass charms & wine bottle pendants, and garden stakes.

This video will give you a sense of what Barb's Cottage is all about (it is not a live link so you must copy & paste it in your browser):

Shipping
Barb's Cottage ships within 1 to 2 days of payment. The shipping cost includes packing materials and boxes as well as postage. We use eco-friendly bubble wrap and peanuts (they're made of cornstarch!).
