About

For the Love of Color, Fabric and Carefree Elegance.

Thanks for visiting my shop!

Barefoot Modiste is a one woman party. My name is Milli. I am an African-born Canadian woman. A Gemini. A self-taught seamstress and growing artist.

When I was about 8 years old, I received my first sewing machine as a birthday present from my Momma. It was a cute, tiny white and red thing with a strawberry foot pedal. I loved it, used it a ton and eventually broke it, lol. My grandma is a seamstress, so there was always her vintage treadle sewing machine to play with after that. I guess it all started there. I have grown and continue to mature on a creative journey that brings me much joy.

Sewing is addictive. Or shall I say fabric is addictive.
I love fabric – different textures and colors - vintage ones, funky ones, I-don't-know-what-I-will-make-with-this-but-I-gotta-have-it ones, 1960s-70s-80s-90s ones...

My interests in style range from bohemian to carefree African elegance to Victorian romantic. I aim to create gorgeous garments that flatter a woman’s figure. Garments that are vibrant, feminine, comfortable and timeless. All that matters is that you feel beautiful and comfortable in whatever it is you choose to wear.

Another part of the Barefoot Modiste design process involves reclaiming random items, crafts and inspiring textiles I find along my merry thrift-shopping way. There are so many little treasures out there waiting to be discovered and reused. You can expect to see fun, vintage, funky (and always chic) reclaimed fabrics in my shop.

Sincere Thank Yous to all my lovely customers for shopping handmade and for listening to my fabric musings!
