Fiber artist, woodworker, electrician, interior designer to imagine, create & install.

My inspiration as a designer started in my childhood growing up in Kansas City, Missouri. Regular trips to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, summer scholarships to the Kansas City Art Institute and a mother, who made my clothes, has influenced my personal and artistic aesthetic. After attending Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University, I taught preschool in NYC during the 1980's. In 1989, I moved to Woodstock, NY while expecting my son, Aidan. During my pregnancy I taught myself to sew and began making my own clothing. Lining a coat felt so challenging, that I decided the garment deserved to be reversible and my signature design feature was born. All of my reversible designs are inspired by courtly Asian traditions of humble exteriors with secret opulent interiors, reflecting a classic yet thoroughly modern aesthetic. For fifteen years, I sold my designs at craft shows in New York City. Success at these shows allowed me to purchase the stream side property where Barneche Design / Stephanie Barnes Studio is situated.

From 2003 to 2006 I took a three year pause from clothing design and worked with a master electrician, training with him and working in construction. I now rewire antique fixtures and lamps and craft handmade lampshades from vintage and new textiles. My studio is a unique resource for antique lighting, offering antique wall sconces, chandeliers, pendant lights, and ceiling fixtures.

In 2012, I moved away from creating clothing and accessories toward interior and exterior design. I craft artful, handmade tables, hutches, benches, cabinets and chairs from reclaimed lumber . Salvaged wood from local barns and remnants of architectural treasures come together with a philosophy of recycling and making things with a rustic, upscale charm. Antique screws and hinges complete the transformation of something old into something new. I love to add finishing touches using colorful vintage textiles and whimsical re-purposed objects.

Friends often asked me for help arranging their home's furniture or to choose the right color for their walls. At times, I have done this ritually with the change of seasons in my own home. From my studio, one can see into the rooms of my house and very often I hear “If only my house could look like this!” Thus began the addition of interior design services at Barneche Design/ Stephanie Barnes Studio. My irregular skill-set allows me to imagine, create and install. I love to make things like the frontier settlers, building from what I have, organically generating beautiful objects for the sake of necessity and function, sprinkled with charm and whimsy....... I am very blessed to be able to make what I like.
