WoodBooks and wooden toys

In this shop you will find the original Baumstammbuch. Books made from one tree trunk, chopped up into pages. Inside figurines to take out, hand-carved with care. And you find wooden toys, animals carved from wood, simple and smooth, sweet but not funny, a pleasure to touch and joy to look at.
Already as a student I worked with a manufacturer of Waldorf animals. What I learned was the importance of the simple form, the true gesture, the warm, natural material, the absence of detail and anatomy, the freedom of child-imagination and harmony. More and more I developed an aversion against modern plastic toys, war-toys, so called fantasy-toy, electronic toys. Childhood seems to me so worthy, the quiet play, the ever creative, never ending child own fantasy. I decided to dedicate my life the task of child-education. And there were two more passion of my own I had to use: First, my hands skillfulness and the pursue to create something beautiful. Second my addiction to nature, everything that grows and lives.
After study of art and art-therapy I went to Russia, first to Moscow then to the far away countryside. There I lived on my own. Water from the well, fire to cook, garden to feed yourself and animals, who help you - a most simple way of life, hard and self-sustainable. Chopping firewood everyday I marveled about the beauty of wood. The absence of machines, sometimes electricity at all, I began in the long winter evenings to cut figurines out of the chopped wood. And it was only a small step to the invention of the WoodBook.

Thank you for your visit. I take a lot of pride in the items I make. I want you to be as happy with the item you purchase as we were to make it, and we hope you and/or your children get lots of enjoyment out of anything you purchase here.

Idea: It is important to me to create something beautiful and useful. My animals are cute but not funny, simple, but not coarse, smooth, but not too much. Holding it in your hands, you will feel: It is made by hand and it is all natural.

I love all different types of wood, but most animals I make in alder wood. It is of warm color, smooth, strong enough not to break but not too hard to be carved. It grows in our valley. So does other beautiful wood I use, as birch, walnut, beech, oak, apple, cherry... Each item is carefully cut, sanded smooth, and the edges are slightly rounded and hand sanded to make sure they're friendly for little hands. Most animals are left natural so children can project their own colors onto them, stimulating imagination! We finish each item with beeswax or natural oil which is rubbed in and buffed for sheen and to help seal the wood.

Additional policies and FAQs
WOODBOOKS are pieces of art, unrepeatable and unique. They are made by hand with great care and skill. You will be marveled to have it in your hands and to understand - it is all made from one tree-trunk. When you take out the figures, set them up in front of the unfolded pages, illuminate perhaps by candle light - you will be drawn into a little miracle.
Please have in mind: Yes – it is to show to children, but not so much to play for them. Parts can be lost, maybe broken, small children might try to swallow... So give it to children in appropriate age. Sometimes a figure doesn´t go in or out easily. Try it from the other side – never use force, only delicateness.
The opposite is true with my wooden animals. They are made to be played with more then one generation. They are save and stable.
