Bay Blown Glass

“Glass is one entity and I'm another, and together we dance. We are drawn to glass through its unique process— it is fluid, unforgiving, timeless and takes more then a life time to master.”

Peter and Dana thrive in the collaborative aspect of glass making. Most often, glass is made through a team effort, so they have built an intimate relationship to thoughtfully design and skillfully carry out the creation of each work of art. Through years of teamwork, a partnership have been established to develop the synchronization required to flawlessly execute each piece as if it were a poetic dance in motion. Bay Blown Glass’s hand blown glassware emphasizes rich rainbow themed color schemes displayed on unique modern forms. Applying wild colors through design to push the boundaries of traditional glassware while still maintaining proper function is the goal. Striving to create tableware that sparks joy and adds a splash of color to everyday life. Their hand crafted sculptural expressions aim to preserve the precious fleeting moments before they slip away, captured through glass’s light and fluidity to captivate life— turning the temporal timeless, giving everyone something special to hold on to. The seascapes, landscapes, and animal creations share their inspirational experiences with the world we live in.

Peter and Dana use the technique of glass blowing and free hand sculpting as their medium of expression to which each piece is uniquely created. After gathering from a pool of molten glass onto blow pipes and punty rods the glass is then manipulated by rolling, cutting, pulling, heating, cooling, twisting, blowing, and/or squeezing into the desired shape. This duo uses rich color schemes and different techniques to carry out their designs. Most of their pieces are decorated with small granules of pure colored glass called frit. The frit is poured into different color trays and the molten glass is rolled through adding the color. Other processes used to decorate their work are ancient techniques such as the use of canes and murrini. Color is added to the glass then stretched very thin and broken into smaller segments. These strings or “canes” are then lined up side by side on a ceramic plate, using heat they are added to the molten glass.

Bay Blown Glass consists of two artists, Peter Stucky and Dana Rottler. They forged their relationship while studying for their BFA in Glass at California College of the Arts and Crafts where they studied under Clifford Rainy, Pamina Traylor and Elin Christopherson. Since graduating they have been collaboratively creating in the San Francisco Bay, forming Bay Blown Glass in 2014 with the goal to push the limits of glass art and design. Starting out selling through different platforms they have spread to craft fairs and galleries across the country. From 2014-2019 they both ran the glass program at Palo Alto High School and helped develop “PALY Fiery Arts” a non profit PTA ran glass program designed to enrich high school students lives through the education of glass making.
