Announcement   My jewelry is a celebration of color and light, shape and texture, for women with their own uniquely cool sense of style. I hope as you explore my shop you'll find something perfect for yourself or someone special.

I use simple tools and techniques to create distinctive wire designs and woven jewelry using gemstones, pearls and beads from around the world. Ideas pop into my head out of the blue, or evolve as I play with the raw materials that inspire me every day. Many pieces are one of a kind, but sometimes a good design is worth repeating, and I'll create variations on a theme. I also enjoy creating custom work, it moves me in directions I might not come to on my own, and I grow as an artist with every collaboration, so don't hesitate to contact me if you would like something special just for you.

Follow me @beadmatrix on Instagram to see new jewelry in the making, my original sketches and all the stuff that inspires me every day!

About

So many visions, not enough hours in the day!

I started my shop here on etsy when I moved to Portland, Maine in May of 2008, after making and selling jewelry at shows and galleries in the Washington D.C. area for many years. My work has been featured in galleries in Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio, the Glass Quarterly Hot Sheet, Art Jewelry magazine and others. My distinctive designs focus on pearls and gemstones, and the organic shapes that arise from nature. I had a lot to learn about having a shop online, so I started out slow, and in that time my work has evolved and I think I've grown as an artist, too. My focus has shifted from seed bead jewelry to wire, and my designs are very different from wire-wrapping, with a style all their own.

I've gone from improvising wire weaving as a teen to complex beadweaving with needle and thread, and back to wire in the last few years. I love to create dimensional pieces, whose shape arises organically from the gemstones and pearls, or the weaving itself. Many pieces are one-of-a-kind, but sometimes a good design is worth repeating, and I will often do "variations on a theme", and spin out a series in a whole collection. Some designs are planned and carefully constructed, others evolve as I play, and I am grateful to have an imagination that keeps new designs bubbling to the surface all the time. Sometimes I can't sketch fast enough to keep up! You hear so much about "writer's block", when I as young I was afraid my visions would dry up and disappear one day, but they never have. I think even if they stopped coming now, I would never run out of things to do, I have so many sketches piled up. And Mother Nature keeps providing us with new variations on beautiful stones and pearls, which inspire me even more!

You can save 10% on my jewelry if you pin 3 items from my shop on Pinterest and send me a link to your page. I will send you a coupon you can use for your next order! If you like my Facebook page you can see more intimate glimpses of my home studio and life here in the East End of Portland, Maine. And you can follow me on Instagram @beadmatrix to see new jewelry in the making, my original sketches, and the stuff that inspires me every day.

I do beadwork, and make jewelry especially, because I am still entranced by beads, and wearing a miniature work of art is a great way to connect without even saying a word. Most of my stuff comes from the sheer pleasure of playing with color, texture, rocks, metal, glass; it's really about how it feels, not something I'm trying to "say". My mouth works just fine when I've got something to say, ask anybody! So my art is about beauty: color, light, shape, and texture, with very rare exceptions - such as my Celtic Moon series, and my few tongue-in-cheek erotic pieces. I still strive to break the boundaries of conventional beadwork by creating unheard of dimensions in beadweaving, as well as affordable, original jewelry design with precious metals and beads.

I use sterling and fine silver, as well as 14karat yellow and rose gold-filled beads, wire and chain. Rather than using vermeil, which is a very thin layer of gold over silver, gold-filled components are made with two layers of karat gold bonded to a brass core, where the karat gold is 300% thicker than it is on vermeil, so it is both durable and affordable. I also make occasional use of solid copper, brass and vintage metals where noted.

For those with sensitive ears, Niobium (a super hypoallergenic metal in the same family as Titanium) earwires are available at no extra charge. Solid 14karat white, yellow and rose gold earwires and posts are available at current market prices. A few of my most complex woven pieces are made exclusively with solid gold.

Refunds and Exchanges
Refunds and exchanges may be negotiated at the seller's discretion. Most of my jewelry is quite sturdy, since I myself tend to be hard on things and I want them to last forever - I hate to do all that work for nothing! But the nature of the medium is that some things are fragile and many beads are still hand-drilled and handcrafted, so durability can vary. And even the finest pearls need to be restrung every couple of years!
For the most part, simply avoid spraying perfume or hairspray or applying cosmetics or lotions while wearing beaded jewelry, and remove before swimming, showering or sleeping. Woven pieces can be cleaned with a soft cloth or a soft unused toothbrush - never use chemical cleaners. Store metal jewelry protected from air and moisture, in a closed box or bag.
Refunds for jewelry lost or damaged in transit will be made when claims are settled by the shipper, USPS or FedEx, usually after 30 days. Be sure to keep the packaging for inspection if something is damaged or missing from the package, and contact me immediately if you have any problem at all.

TRADING and CUSTOM ORDERS
Do you also have an ETSY shop? I am always open to trades. If you see something in my shop and would like to trade, please convo me and hopefully we can make a deal!!
For custom work, just click on "Contact" to send me a message about what you'd like to get started. I've always believed art is something magical, and I believe that creating something new in conjunction with someone else's vision stretches me as an artist in ways I might otherwise miss, and forges connections beyond that of buyer and seller, which is even better!

Add custom FAQ

Goldfilled jewelry is a lifetime product, made with a thick layer of karat gold bonded to a core of jeweler's brass. The gold layer is legally required to be 5%, or 1/20 of the total weight: 14k GF is stamped with a mark that says "14/20" (on commercially produced earwires, etc). I use 14k GF findings and wire from reputable sources such as Halstead Bead and Rio Grande.

By contrast, gold-plated products have an applied gold surface layer that is just 1/100th (0.05%) of goldfilled, and like vermeil, which has a layer of higher karat gold over silver, usually tarnishes easily and wears away quickly.

14k GF can tarnish under extreme conditions; I live by the sea so to be safe I store it away from the salt air, in a box or bag.
