About

From the field of war to a field of sheep.

Little did I know, 10 years ago as I first prepared to deploy to Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division in February of 2003, that I would one day find myself the owner and operator of a small ranch in Oregon. I had spent the happiest part of my childhood on a sheep ranch, but I'd put that long behind me when I joined the military.

Yet, sheep reached out once more to grasp my heart, this time in the wide open land of Northern Iraq. There, the Awassi sheep captured my attention with their graceful, delicate legs, their strange long, perfectly straight wool, and their huge, beaver-like tails. I talked to many Iraqi shepherds through the help of our interpreters, and I was both appalled by the terrors they had faced under Saddam's rule, and saddened by the state of their lives, completely disrupted, in the aftermath of war once more. Although we were from very different places, cultures, and outlooks, we shared the love of our land and the love of sheep.

My military career was cut short when I was catastrophically injured, and I found myself rudderless in a urban area with no real purpose to hang my hat on. After years of this, I found myself thinking more and more about those Awassi sheep. A year later, with the help of many friends, I was the proud owner of a 40 acre ranch, a flock of mismatched chickens, and an even smaller flock of Navajo-Churro Sheep. This heritage breed is remarkably similar to the Awassi sheep of Iraq, but carries its own flair of distinction that is owed to the careful breeding and stewardship of another dispossessed people, the Navajo Nation.

There is a Navajo saying that goes "Sheep is life." Here at Dot Ranch, I live those words every single day. Our sheep are our friends, our family, our sustenance, and our means of survival and balance. We treasure our sheep, and we treasure our land, and I firmly believe that the wool and fleeces our sheep give us show that difference in love and care.
