About

Beautiful Mind Designs is a recent offshoot of Finders Keepers Design

... a company I started in 2007, when – with the kind of knee-knocking trepidation familiar to many Etsy owners – I gave up the security of a salary and benefits and took the plunge into self-employment. I am the sole proprietor and sole employee of both of Finders Keepers and Beautiful Mind Designs.

As Finders Keepers Design, I make artwork – mostly commissioned – out of people's photos and other memorabilia. My process, which I have come to call “techno-rustic art-cycling,” is an artsy+crafty+techie hybrid. Examples of my work, including digital paintings and portraits, mixed- and multi-media memory montages, giftware and stationery products, are on my FindersKeepersDesign.com website. On a sister site aimed specifically at pet-lovers – FindersKeepersPets.com – are some of my digital pet portraits and info about the various surfaces on which they can be printed.

Over the last few years, I have created an increasing number of non-commissioned works – primarily digital paintings. I make these paintings on my Mac using a combination of Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, assorted plug-ins and a Wacom pen tablet whose stylus functions as whatever kind of brush, pen, or other art tool I tell the software to make it.

Based on the encouragement of friends, family and clients, I decided to offer some of these paintings for sale "off the wall." I started by inviting people to visit my studio/gallery/global HQ – which is the house my sibs and I grew up in during the 60s and 70s, and which I now share with my husband Matt, our dog Scuppy, and our cat, Gadget. Fortunately, all three are wonderfully supportive of my artistic endeavors and don't seem to mind that my paintings now cover about 80% of our wall space.

Lots of kind words and a few sales later, I worked up the gumption to take the show online. It took no time at all to determine that Etsy was the perfect place to set up shop. I opened Beautiful Mind Designs in November, 2013. When I got my first order in December – from a complete stranger, no less!! – I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

The works for sale at Beautiful Mind Designs are my painterly interpretations of photographs – some I’ve taken myself and some taken by talented amateur traveller-photographers who have graciously allowed me to paint scenes they have captured in exotic locations. My GigaBurgh series is based on close-ups I capture from gigapixel panoramas of my hometown: Pittsburgh, PA. Part of the Pittsburgh Gigapanorama project, these high-resolution "gigapans" were shot from the roof tops of the U.S. Steel Tower downtown and buildings overlooking the city from atop Mount Washington. They are online and open for public viewing at gigapanorama.org.

As an artist who respects artistic ownership and the copyright laws governing intellectual property, I always get permission before painting from images photographed by others, and I always acknowledge individual photographers alongside my own signature. I also offer source-material contributors an up-front license fee or a percentage of profits. With the Pittsburgh Gigapanorama folks, I have agreed to negotiate a profit-sharing deal if they ever feel my sales figures justify it. This is a problem I would LOVE to have.

The offerings in my shop are giclée (archival quality) prints from my digital painting files. I rely on outside vendors to print these. I have used a variety of print houses, Fine Print Imaging in Colorado and American Art Editions in North Carolina being my favorites. While all inks and most papers have some amount of environmental impact, these companies offer some of the greenest options available, like water-soluble inks and chlorine- and VOC-free papers made from bamboo and recycled cotton. Fine Print Imaging’s website includes a page detailing their sustainability commitment and environmental awards. I am confident that these companies’ business practices fall within Etsy’s (and my own) ethical expectations for partnering manufacturers.

I hope you enjoy my paintings and my shop. Perhaps one day your own Beautiful Mind will FIND something here that you just have to KEEP!
