Birds.

We each have a story. This is a little bit of mine. I grew up in a big family in a small town, and my Mom and Dad didn’t have a lot of money. We practiced the hand-me-down philosophy and also shopped second-hand stores. It used to cost a dime to make a call from a pay phone, and to avoid spending that dime, our family had one and two-ring codes which allowed the dime to be returned upon hanging up the phone. Each code meant something, just like those dimes.

In the fourth grade, I got my first paper route, alongside my brothers. Every morning I’d get up at 5:20, separate my share of newspapers from my brothers’ shares, hop on my bicycle, and deliver them to my customers. Life was easy back then and I juggled a few jobs besides going to high school and eventually college. Some of my jobs were serving ice cream cones, bussing tables, racking raw sausage from a conveyor belt, feeding wood through a machine that molded them into chair legs, sorting books in a bookstore, selling newspaper ads, snow cones, children's books, and greeting cards. I processed tax returns for a while, and sold beer out of a golf cart when I didn't even like golf!

In 2010, when over thirty years of steady paychecks from better jobs ground to a halt, self-reflection began. I returned to my love of creating and decided to teach myself how to paint. Prior to that, I’d taken an elective drawing class in college and studied pottery-making in the mid-2000s while in San Antonio. Unbeknownst to me at the time, those were the sparks that re-lit my creative fire that had been entombed for decades, for I still have my grade school, pottery project sitting on my shelf. Over the years, I job-hopped from one to the next and carried that ‘grass-is-always-greener’ disease, but I'd still walk away from every one of those jobs again to do what I’m doing now. I really love birds, and love to paint them.

My spark bird is the Eastern Whip-poor-will because when I was a kid, I used to sit on my bed and stare out of my bedroom window before falling asleep, listening to the Whip-poor-will on hot summer nights. And when those hot summer nights turned into hotter summer days, the Eastern Wood-Pewee sang alongside the cicadas while I did chores in my Dad’s garden. That bird is my second-favorite spark bird.

I live by the following words I once read in a magazine. [Most artists would probably like to be “successful,” both critically and financially, but what an artist’s reputation will be a hundred years from now has yet to be revealed. I once had an important collector with a vast and varied collection say to me, “If I were to tell you the names of the top-selling artists in France at the end of the 19th century, you would not recognize them.” If “success” during an artist’s lifetime is a fool-proof predictor, then Vincent Van Gogh would surely be one of history’s greatest flops. I tell my university students: “Just make what you make no matter how ‘out there,’ or misunderstood; no matter who approves or who does not. If you believe in it – make it! Even if it’s pure cornpone – just make it!” The only hope that any of us have of being truly “successful” is to make what’s in our heart and make it to the best of our ability.]

My name is Becca Mulenburg, I am an artist. This is my place in the world. Welcome to my Etsy store.

If you're considering a purchase, it might be helpful to understand that I am only one person, not a big company or corporation. Almost every print purchase is a custom order, although I do have some on hand. I work with a local printer to produce high-quality, color-accurate prints of my work. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to incur losses or absorb returns like a big company, or a person with greater means could.

Did you know?
I am a painter not a printer. As mentioned above, I use a local, professional printing company to produce high-quality, color-accurate prints of my work. This is where my quality can differ from other Etsy sellers. I inspect what I ship to maintain strict quality control. I realize there are cheaper options from other Etsy sellers, but with me you're getting the best. Period. I will not sacrifice quality just to gain a sale.

Shipping Timelines: Canvas prints take a little longer to produce than paper prints, so if an item is offered as both a paper print and a canvas print, paper prints will ship quicker than what's indicated in the listing.

Honors:
Juried into the prestigious international “Birds in Art” exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the International Exhibition of Fine Art in Miniature, sold internationally, won numerous awards.

All items ship from my smoke-free, pet-free home. For more information, visit https://beccamulenburg.com.

Welcome to my online gallery. I continue to learn a lot from nature, especially birds. They help calm my soul. Sometimes when I'm feeling troubled, they can be especially helpful when I'm searching for peace. I study them in their natural habitats and use my photographs to guide my art, whether through oil paintings, pencil drawings or other creative outlets such as note card making. All of my artwork comes from spending time with these birds in person, the vast majority from the wild – it's a part of my work that's very important to me. It's true that if you hang around birds long enough, they'll let you into their world. And what a wonderful world it is!
