About

Beer Can Darl - nickname, hobby, Etsy shop

First things first: my real name is not Darl. It's Ryan. But those who are close to me have been calling me Darl for years. Darl actually came from Carl. Carl came from...nowhere. When people hear my wife casually call me Darl, they usually think it's short for "darling," which sounds kind of sweet. Wrong. This information may seem unnecessary, but it's how the story of my Etsy shop starts.

Like The Ramones, Apple, and many other world-famous success stories, Beer Can Darl started in a garage. I started messing around with turning old rusty beer cans into art while living in Denton, Texas. I had a lot of enthusiasm but not a lot of money, so old beer cans and crates were a natural starting point. I spent a lot of time experimenting with different styles, materials, and designs. At some point I added beer labels into the mix - this turned out to be a brilliant idea, since they often have really nifty artwork and carry a much lower tetanus risk than rusty steel cans. I hit my stride creating maps out of cans, labels, and crates.

A few years ago, I left Texas for Illinois and was promoted out of the garage and into the attic. I now live in a Chicago bungalow with my wife, brother, and cat - all of whom still call me Darl (seriously, the cat can say it). When I need to scratch my artistic itch, I sneak up to my attic workshop to create ornaments, collages and maps using the colorful beer cans of yesteryear.

Thanks for stopping by the shop. Cheers!
