FAQ:

Q: "What does 'hollow back' mean?"
A: Hollow back refers to what the reverse of the metal piece looks like. For stampings, hollow back will be the most frequently seen style. Below are the meanings of the types of stampings backs:
* Hollow Back - this means the image stamped into the metal can be seen in reverse on the back.
* flat back - stamped out of a thicker sheet of metal, the back is smooth. It may not be flat at all, but rather curved to the contours of the piece. The reverse of the image on the front can not be seen on the back.
* textured back - there is a different image stamped onto the back than is stamped on the front. Neither image can be seen from the other side.
* double sided - the stamping is folded in such a way that it looks like a 3D charm with the image appearing on both sides with a hollow center. There is no discernible front or back.

Q: "What is meant by 'raw'"?
A: 'Raw' refers to unfinished brass or tombac. There is no plating or lacquer on the metal. Both are copper alloys. The brass we use is low brass which means it is 80% copper 20% zinc. It has a light golden color when polished. Tombac, also known as rich low brass, is 85% copper and 15% zinc. It has a noticeable red coloring. Many people mistake it for raw copper, but it does not oxidize as quickly in air and is much stronger (harder). Both copper alloys take a patina beautifully. For more information on how to patina raw metals please visit our web site www.BelLuxeMetal.com

Q: What is a patina? (What is oxidization?)
A: A patina is the tarnish that can be produced due to age or a chemical process on some raw metal surfaces. This process is also known as oxidization because oxygen is the main caustic element that is changing the structure of the metal. The type and level of patina can vary due to conditions, time or the types of chemicals used. When iron patinas is is a reddish orange color (commonly known as rust), then bronze, brass or copper patinas it tends to be either a greenish color (think the statue of liberty) or a darker brown/black color (think bronze statues from antiquity at the museum). When silver oxidizes it turns a dark black/gray color. Gold does not oxidize.

Q: What do you mean by lacquer coated?
A: A clear or tinted lacquer is applied in a very thin layer to the surface of the plating. This does not make the plating brighter or shiner. This is simply to protect the surface of the plating from wear and/or tarnish. Since many of our plating are real metals that are naturally oxidized instead of the more common colored metal alloys that have a painted on antiquing, ours could change dynamically with wear or time if they were not coated. This added layer of protection adds time to the life of the piece and protects the color and finish in our effort to make the plating as permanent as possible (nobody likes when their piece changes color because a cheap, low-quality plating wears off).

Q: Why don't you offer an antique gold color?
A: We don't currently offer an antique gold color because of my person pet peeve against this color (I admit it is a little selfish, but maybe if you learn the truth behind this color you will be a convert). All of out antique colors are achieved by the true metal being oxidized (antique brass is oxidized brass, antique copper is oxidized copper, antique silver is oxidized sterling silver). Well, gold is a metal that does not oxidize or patina. So, not only could we not make this color without using an artificial (paint on) antiquing effect, this would never occur in nature. If you see real gold jewelry with dark brown or black in the crevices it just means the jewelry is horribly filthy and caked with crud...so when I see antique gold costume jewelry, all I can think is ewww...I don't want to touch it...it's filthy. If we get a huge demand for this color we might start to carry it, but, probably not. Usually when people find out that gold doesn't 'antique' they don't really want the color anymore, anyway.
