Announcement   Welcome! You have found the little shop of Velvet Cats! Silky, soft, life-size companions which are lovingly hand-sewn with the finest silk-velvet I can obtain. Each is subtly unique (as I couldn't make two exactly alike if I tried!). An original design and pattern --just for fun. They are decorative pillows, comforting, beautiful companions and great conversation starters.

I use silk velvets in a variety of colors and often dye the fabric with both fiber reactive and natural dyes from plants around my garden. I also paint custom kitties with dyes producing tabbies, calico and other varieties with the help of customer photos.

....and Sunshowers! A rustic and elegant mix of wire and beads to add a unique bit of sparkle to your favorite spaces. I love beautiful glass beads but would much rather admire them in the changing light of each day than to wear them.

Questions? Please check the Policy page or feel free to contact me.

Beautiful glass beaded sun-shower. I ordered this sun- shower after seeing it in the header for Cassie's shop and she was able to reproduce for me and as I was leaving home soon she rushed the order and got it to me before leaving. It arrived securely wrapped and in beautiful condition. I have purchased other sun-showers and have loved each of them. Cassie is wonderful to work with. I couldn't be happier.

About

Creating velvet cats as decorative pillows for the home.

With a length of fabulous deep brown velvet in hand one day I imagined a sleek cat. With a little experimentation, my pattern for a 'dreaming cat' was conceived. I have tried other fabrics, but only exquisite silk velvet seems to breathe life into the form when completed. The size, shape and sculpted details have evolved over the years. I 'sculpt' the faces with little stitches and tucks. Every stitch creates and changes the personality of individual cats. Each individual velvet seems to work the pattern a little bit differently as well depending on length of nap, fabric content and construction.

I also dye my own velvet in small batches, enough fabric for one or two cats at a time. Some dyes used are cold process fiber reactive and some are natural dyes from the available plants and materials around me. There are so many variables which change the colors from one batch to the next I never tire of being surprised and amazed by the results.

Custom orders are always welcomed.

Additional policies and FAQs
Your cat is crafted in a smoke-free, pet-free (I know) home.

Custom requests for a general color would certainly be welcomed. If I think I have a suitable fabric at hand, producing and shipping your cat would probably take approx. a week. Hope I can accommodate your wishes, but please keep in mind that I really never know what specific fabrics or colors will be available at a given time from my supplier and I cannot dye two pieces of fabric exactly the same as there are so many variables involved.

Please Note: These velvet cats are not suggested for young children. They are as sturdy as I can make them, but I'm not sure I'd put them up against a toddler having an all out tantrum. (Oh, the memories!)

Cleaning: Although spot hand-cleaning is certainly possible with these rayon-piled silk velvets, the fabric will have a "washed velvet" look after wetting (the nap direction may vary and flatten in a random pattern). I would also suggest testing a small area for colorfastness as each fabric's properties will differ.

If you would like to remove the ribbon collar provided with your cat, simply untie or cut the ribbon and slip off of the cat's neck*. If you'd like to replace the ribbon with your own collar, each cat is designed with a small pass-thru channel between the head and body just forward of the ears. (It's where the original collar was.) This channel will accommodate a small crochet hook or closed safety pin which will carry the new collar under the head from side to side. Careful not to fish around too much as you may hook and pull construction threads. If you get stuck, carefully back out and try again.

* The easiest way to thread your own collar on is to attach your new collar material to one end of the original ribbon before slipping it off the cat. Then gently pull the original ribbon off which will automatically thread the new collar between the cat's head and body. Once your new collar is through the channel, disconnect from the original ribbon and voila!
