All jewelry is handmade in the USA, in a smoke free studio, with the utmost attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship. Your purchase is wrapped in a pretty silver box with a silver ribbon ready for gift giving and is sent in a padded bubble envelope for protection. Shipping costs reflect the cost of packaging as well as actual shipping cost. If you would prefer not to have a gift box, or need an upgrade in shipping, please send me a convo before purchasing and I can adjust the listing for you.

I recommend Earth friendly silver polish with no toxic chemicals for gently removing tarnish, or Wrights Silver Cream to care for all your shiny sterling, fine silver and gold filled jewelry. Don't use either on your oxidized jewelry as it will remove the lovely finish.

Please check my policies page for more information about returns and other policies.

About

Creative energy can conquer all!

My creative life began long before I opened my Etsy store. In fact, I have had, more creative hobbies than most people would ever attempt in their life time! I am a writer, a photographer, a hairdresser and a jewelry artist. And I am also an aspiring singer and song writer. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French and was planning a career in foreign radio broadcasting. I have thrown myself into all sorts of musical activities and spent years painting and drawing. Unfortunately, as life would have it, I never reached the original career destination I had planned, but have been an active creator in many other different ways. Creativity runs so thickly in my blood, you can't beat it out of me! The only creative activity I do not have a flare for, is cooking, much to my children's dismay!

When my husband died, at a young age, I was devastated, and left to raise my two young sons alone, without any family nearby. I had to be really strong, and needed to find a way to get through each day, whilst mourning deeply. It took me a while to channel my energy into the right direction, but when I did, I decided I would have to find a new path through creativity. I had always loved jewelry, and had toyed with the idea of selling antique jewelry, but something challenged me further, and raised the question of learning how to make jewelry instead. So, I bought several books on beading, a few supplies, and in a very short time, I was hooked! Before I knew it, I needed a new challenge, and then taught myself the art of wire wrapping. After that, I was so excited about my new skills, I enrolled in metal smithing classes at our local jewelry arts school. That is when I finally felt I had come home!

A couple years after honing my skills, and far too many pieces for myself to wear, I began to entertain the idea of starting my own business. It felt like a huge risk, but never turned off by a challenge, I jumped in, and began Belles Bijoux, which means beautiful jewelry, in 2008. I started selling at craft shows, and a year later, discovered Etsy, which was a godsend, as trying to be a full time mom and work on weekends at craft shows, was very difficult. I jumped at the opportunity to sell online and have a flexible work schedule. It was the best fit for work during a very difficult time for me.

Running my business on Etsy has allowed me to combine all of my creative skills in one place. Every day I get to be a photographer, a writer and a designer. I can even sing while on the job! I design and print my own labels and earring cards, cutting each one to size, by hand. I absolutely love knowing that I am making people happy with the work that I do. Everything I make, comes from my heart and is made with my own two hands, from start to finish. I love that it starts with me, and ends up, sometimes, somewhere across the globe!

Since starting my business, I appreciate it even more than ever, as a couple of years ago, I became really ill with late stage Lyme disease. Since then, I have had to change my life style dramatically. My business gives me much joy when I can't get out and do the things I used to do. The frustrating side, is that I often have more pain than I can deal with, and have to keep balancing what I can do in terms of taking on custom orders, which I love. Still, selling on Etsy allows me to work, which, in a traditional setting, would not be an option for me.

Regardless of my current life circumstances, my creative energy never stops flowing. If I am not creating, I am designing, and if I am not designing I am dreaming of the designs for my next piece. Whatever the challenge, my creative purpose keeps moving me forward to whatever destination comes next! What an amazing gift!

Welcome to Gillian Smits Studioworks doing business as Belles Bijoux! Thank you for your interest in my business! Making jewelry is my passion and I hope you will be as happy with my products as much as I enjoy making them!

Please remember, that as an artist, all of my jewelry designs and photographs are automatically copyrighted, and may not be copied or reproduced in any way without my written permission.

I am meticulous about my craftmanship at all levels of fabrication. I do not contract out any of my labor. Each piece is lovingly hand made. I have had formal training in metalsmithing and jewelry making skills from the CT School of Jewelry Art, and I pride myself in creating jewelry that is of high quality. That being said, hand made pieces are just that - made by hand, and each one will be unique even if it is the same design, bearing tiny marks of the artists hand. These are not considered flaws, but part of the hand made process.

Please remember that computer monitors display colors very differently when looking at gemstone colors. Best image quality and color is seen on a color calibrated monitor. My monitor is calibrated to 6500K.

Accepted payment methods

Payment
I accept Direct Checkout, Paypal and credit cards through PayPal as well as money orders. If payment for an order is not not received within 24 hours, the order will be cancelled. If you are paying by money order, please email me so that I know that there will be a delay in payment. Money orders and e-checks via Paypal must clear before I will ship your order. All ready made orders via Paypal and Direct checkout will ship within 3 business days of receipt of payment. If I am unable to mail your order within the 1-3 business day time frame, due to do illness or some unexpected situation, I will convo you immediately to inform you of the expected shipping date.

If you need to cancel an order, please contact me immediately as the cancellation process needs to be initiated by myself. Any cancellations need to be made within 24 hours of placing your order and prior to your order shipping.

Custom orders which are orders that are made especially for you, require a 50% down payment of the total order as a deposit, to begin work. Once your materials have been ordered, the deposit cannot be refunded. See more in "Additional information".

All CT buyers will be charged 6.35% sales tax. If the invoice does not automatically add on the tax, please email me for a final invoice before paying.
Shipping
Your jewelry will be mailed to you in a sturdy gift box inside a bubble mailer via USPS First Class mail. Shipping costs include the cost of the padded mailer as well as gift packaging for your purchase. Delivery confirmation is also included in shipping costs. To keep shipping costs low, if you have ordered more than one piece of jewelry, they will be mailed in the same gift box. If you need overnight or any other type of expedited shipping please let me know and I will organize that for you.

Insurance is not included in shipping costs unless your purchase is $50 or more. Only your jewelry is insured, not shipping costs. First class International mail includes insurance of your item/s only, not shipping costs. Please convo me for insurance rates if you wish to purchase insurance. I will then adjust your shipping rate before you purchase or can send you a Paypal invoice for the extra shipping costs.

International shipping is automatically shipped as First Class mail International. First Class international mail includes tracking whilst the package is in the USA, but not all countries track the package once it arrives in your country of origin. If you wish to have tracking for your international order, I recommend you upgrade your shipping to registered mail with a certificate of mailing. Please contact me for a price.

Please remember that you are responsible for any customs fees associated with international shipping. Packages mailed overseas cannot be marked as a gift as this is against the law.

If you do not receive your package, please contact me immediately, so that I can help you retrieve your package. If your package does get lost in the mail, only the cost of your item/s will be refunded to you if your item was insured. Shipping costs are not refunded.
Refunds and Exchanges
I do not accept returns on earrings for hygiene reasons.

Please note that I do not accept returns on custom orders and made to order items. Each custom order requires many hours of my time making a product just for you, and unless there is a defect in the material or workmanship, please understand that I cannot accept any returns on custom orders. Rings that do not fit are not considered defective. Please see my policies on rings under "Additional information".

All other orders: If you are unsatisfied with your purchase for any reason, you may return it to me in its original, unworn condition within 7 days of receipt. All sales are final after the 7 day period. You must contact me before returning any item to initiate the return process and state why you are returning it. I am a perfectionist when it comes to the products I make, so knowing the reason for your return, helps me to provide a better product for my customers. If there is any damage to the original item after it has left my hands, I am unable to exchange it or refund it.

Shipping costs on returns are not refundable. Your money will be refunded via the original form of payment, once I have received the item. If you purchased an item with free shipping (via a coupon or at my discretion), and you would like to return that item, you will be refunded the full amount the item cost, minus the shipping it cost me to mail it to you.

I am happy to exchange any item that is not a sale item, earrings, or made to order/custom order. The customer is responsible for shipping costs associated with any exchange. Exchanges must be initiated within 7 days of receiving your order and the original item must be unworn and in its original condition.
Additional policies and FAQs
Custom Orders:

I welcome custom orders! Many of my products can be substituted with different stones and I am happy to discuss your needs and ideas!

Custom orders are taken on a case by case basis as my time permits.

For custom orders I require an initial deposit of 50% of the total item cost, before starting your custom order, with the balance to be paid once your order is complete and is ready to ship. This deposit is non-refundable and it is used to buy the materials for your order. Once your materials have been ordered, this deposit cannot be returned. One hour of free design time is included with your custom order. Design time includes all emails/conversations needed to create your order. After the one free hour has been met, I charge $50 per additional hour, in increments of 15 minutes. This fee will be communicated to you via conversations on Etsy so that you are aware of the time process that is occurring. The design fee may be added to the final balance or halved, with half added to the deposit and half to the final balance.
All prices for metals used in custom orders will be based on the current silver and gold market.

Rings:

***Ring sizing is the responsibility of the customer***

It is my job to get your ring size made perfectly in the size that you order and I use standardized industry tools for creating your custom ring to do that, so you will get the exact size you ask for, with very little room for change. So, please make sure your ring size is accurate!!!

When determining your ring size, the width of the ring band is the single most important factor to consider! The wider and thicker the ring band is, the larger your ring size will need to be. Always compare the size of the ring band in the ring chart to a comparable ring band you own, for accuracy. Stacking ring sets will usually require a 1/4 to 1/2 size larger size if they are going to be worn together. Please visit your local jeweler to get fitted if you have any doubts about your ring size or email/convo me to discuss any questions you have.

Sterling silver rings set with stones cannot be re-sized. Gold filled rings cannot be re-sized due to the damage to the thin layer of gold on the surface that would occur during the resizing process. I do not down size sterling silver rings as this requires as much work as making the original ring. The only exception I make on resizing is enlarging silver bands without stones up to 1/4 size larger. I charge a fee of $35 for this as it involves time consuming stretching, resanding and repolishing your ring/s. I do not enlarge any more than this, because the amount of metal I use is mathematically calculated for the ring size you give me, and enlarging the ring any more would make risk thinning the metal and compromising the strength of your ring.

Gold filled rings will almost always show a minor solder seam. This is because gold filled products have an inner core of jeweler's bronze, and there is no exact color match for solders used with gold filled. I use 14k yellow gold solder with all 14k gold filled materials, and the solder is a slightly lighter color than the metal. No matter who makes your gold filled jewelry, this will be the case. I try to keep the solder seam very neat and minimize the amount of solder used, so that the seam is not obvious.

Feedback:

My business depends on your positive feedback, therefore I aim to make my customers happy! You will receive positive feedback from me after your order has been paid for and I would really appreciate your positive feedback via Etsy's feedback system, once our transaction has been completed and you have received your order.

I really love my work, so if you are unhappy with our transaction, please contact me immediately so that I can remedy your situation.

Thank you for your business!
