I am truly passionate about my products! All of my items are of my own design, both the actual item and all the appliques. I have tested different size needles, and different size yarns, to find just the texture, drape, and form for each of my products. Each of my patterns are tested and changed until I find exactly what I am looking for, and I change patterns when I feel I can make them better. I knit each item by hand with care, and each applique is crocheted by myself using my own patterns, before the two are carefully sewn together. There is a lot of thought and love behind each one of my products, with an emphasis on quality, safety, use, and, of course, design! What good are the first three if you do not want to look at the item every day, and feel comforted just by touching it?

So so cute! Even cuter in person. I like how small it is as a drool bib so it doesn't over take her outfit.

About

What's it all about?

I first started knitting in middle school after my piano teacher taught me the basics. It was not long before I started knitting to sell as I practiced new techniques and learned how to design patterns. It was always short term, though, until Beneath the Beech Tree was born- the name inspired by the deciduous forest filled with beech trees in which I live.

Organic is very important to me, since many of the chemicals found in our modern world are harmful to all of us. Babies are particularly vulnerable to these chemicals as their bodies are still developing. Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world with both pesticides and defoliants for harvesting, and the chemicals do not stop there- the processing of non-organic cotton is filled with harsh solvents, heavy metals, VOCs, and toxic dyes.

Organic is not only important for the end consumer, though. Non-organic cotton is bad for the environment, bad for those that work in or live near cotton fields, particularly the nearby children, and bad for the workers that must process it, often in third world countries with little if any oversight on conditions or safety regulations. The children of the workers face the prospect that their parents will die or become very sick from the chemicals they are exposed to growing or processing cotton, or in some countries they are working themselves. I want to make sure that any product I make is safe not just for the baby that will use it, but also does not carry a hidden history of hurting other children along the way.

Because of this, I use only organically grown and processed fair trade certified cotton, either color grown, without any dyes at all, or dyed with organic vegetable and mineral dyes. This yarn is not only the best for your baby and the world, it is also of the highest quality- less processing leads to a much softer product! I remember how important the feel of different materials was to me as a child, so all of my yarns and knits are put to the test so the final product is safe, but just as important, something your baby will love wearing, chewing, and playing with!

I decided very early in life I was an artist- in Kindergarten, I refused to dress up for "When I am Grown-up Day" because I said I already was what I wanted to be, and I wore my own clothes!

I make sure all of my knitted goods are the best I can do from start to finish. I search for the best yarn I can find, through research and talking to the company that makes it, and I have stringent requirements! I then test any possibility before deciding. I also wrap my yarn into balls by hand and am therefore able to check the yarn while winding to ensure any part of it that is not top quality for any reason is not used.

I feel strongly that my items should promote well being for everyone that receives one, everyone that had a part in their creation (including those that made the yarn, or were affected by where and how the cotton was grown) as well as the planet as a whole in their environmental impact. In continuation with the latter belief, I want to make sure that my business is as environmentally friendly as I can make it, and try to use only eco-friendly and recycled products for all of my labeling, wrapping, and shipping needs, including mailing bags made from recycled fibers.
