About

Bene's dolls

BeneDolls - American Folk Art Dolls & Figures are inspired by antique paper mache dolls, these one-of-a-kind figures are sculpted in paper mache painted and detailed. Some dolls have moveable heads, arms, legs and removable clothing. I make the clothes for each doll using tea dyed fabrics, antique and vintage lace and trims. The dolls have an antique old world quality and their clothes reflect that. Each Benedoll has its own look, and no two are exactly the same.

I’ve been collecting and making dolls since about age 12. My first handmade dolls were a series of bottle dolls I made for my little sister. As an antiques dealer and auctioneer, I have sold several wonderful antique folk art dolls and as a doll collector I really enjoy collecting these dolls and holiday figures. My Benedolls were created because the handmade paper mache dolls and holiday figures I love were getting extremely hard to find. I have four children and I am excited to have my art to share with them. I really enjoy making the dolls and their wardrobe. I formulate stories about each doll to help me with painting their facial expressions and dressing them. My dolls and figures are made primarily out of paper mache and cloth. I source the materials for my figures from antique stores, auctions and flea markets. I've accumulated a great collection of antique and vintage lace, trims, and doll clothes to incorporate into outfits for my Benedolls.

I am an Auctioneer, antiques dealer & collector. I relax by painting and sculpting. The oldest dolls were made of paper mache. Paper Mache is a great medium and it's child-friendly so my children are welcome in my studio as I work.

My dolls and figures are made with the following materials:

Paper Mache: pulped paper and water

Chalkware: I have developed my own chalkware formula that is very smooth and wonderful to paint. I cast chalkware Santas, snowmen, bunnies and other holiday figures. Each is hand cast then individually painted and antiqued for a time worn look.
