Announcement    Welcome to Beyond the Clay Art Studio with me - Shawna Barnes! I am primarily a ceramic sculptor and focus on sculpting animals. However I also have a gambit of disabilities that can make it difficult to create said animal sculptures. This is why you will see an assortment of goodies here in my shop. From polymer clay charms, to art tiles, to resin casts, to small animal sculptures. I have a creative outlet for every stage of ability for any given day. Here at Beyond the Clay Art Studio - the focus is on the PROCESS of creating, not necessarily the end product.

Every month on or around the 5th, the shop will be updated. If something sells out, I add a limited edition color on an item, etc; all those new additions will be added at that time.

20% of every sale goes into my "accessible studio fund". This is a savings account I've established to help get a handicap accessible studio built on our 40 acre property in Maine.

    • I teach art classes to fellow disabled Veterans & their families at every retreat at the Travis Mills Foundation

    It's all about the creative process..

    I am a ceramic sculptor and teaching artist living in coastal Maine with my husband, son, two dogs and a cat. Andy (a great dane/lab mix) is my current service dog, and Kane (a german shepherd) is my retired service dog). All of the animals are rescues.

    It is in my basement studio where I create sculptures that engage, entertain, and invite conversation. My signature anthropomorphic style of giving animals humanistic personalities is a favorite among collectors. In addition to these ceramic animal sculptures, I also create polymer clay charms, ceramic art tiles finished with cold finishes, glazed ceramic tiles for backsplashes, resin art miniatures, and more. I have all these different creative outlets so that no matter what level of disability I’m facing for the day, I can still create.

    As a disabled Veteran artist, I feel that I possess a unique perspective in the Maine art community and I use that as a strength as an educator and advocate for arts accessibility (in all its forms) and arts/creativity in health. In 2018, I was selected to be a teaching artist leader with the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative (MALI). In addition to MALI, I am a member of the Maine Arts Education Association (MAEA), National Arts Education Association (NAEA), and the International Sculpture Society (ISC).

    Before I started pursuing this new artistic passion, I was a combat medic in the Army with 3ID. I won't bore you with the details of my medical retirement and acquired disabilities, but you can read them on my blog if interested (www.shawnabarnes.com/blog)
