Hello, my name is Maja Franklin. I live in the Desert, but I miss the Sea. This is my story.
I was born and raised in Tucson, however, my mother is from Iceland and my father was raised in Mexico. This lead to a very interesting childhood full of dynamic travels to two very different lands. Most of my childhood was spent traveling to Mexico. Both of my parents were artists, my father an oil painter and stone carver and my mother made dolls and marionettes. But on the side, my father imported Casas Grandes pottery, (very beautiful, be sure to look it up if you are not familiar) to the US, which led to many trips down to Northern Mexico. What a beautiful country! I miss traveling there very much.
When I was twelve years old, I made my first voyage to Reykjavik, Iceland to meet that side of my family for the first time. I travelled alone and spent the summer there, sightseeing and babysitting but also becoming very inspired by the work of my grandparents. My grandfather, Sverrir Haraldsson, was a very well known and successful painter of landscapes and my grandmother, Sigrun, was a shop owner who dealt Marrimekko products and produced her own knitted and sewn treasures.
By the time I was seventeen years old, after being exposed to so much amazing work and so many beautiful places, I was ready to get to work. I began an apprenticeship with my father, where I learned to carve frames for his paintings. I was so inspired by his work and his way of life that I immediately started working on my own paintings. I had my first show when I was eighteen and quickly began to build my business. I spent the next few years painting and traveling, to Mexico, Iceland, Italy and western New York. Soon, I fell in love and got married at 22. Nine months and six days later, my daughter, Ruby, was born. Needless to say, this put a stop to my ability to get anything done.
I loved my new, beautiful baby Ruby, but I also loved to work. I wanted to keep her with me always but I couldn't really focus on oil paintings with her in my lap. I had to come up with a way to make things with her around. I began to make little wooden toys, knitted stuffed animals, small acrylic paintings, linoleum block prints, tin wall hangings...anything I could squeeze in while she napped or played at my feet. This was the birth of my handmade children's line that I sell in my Etsy store today. I have since had two more children and my schedule is really full but I am always busy making something...including my oil paintings.
