Jewelry Handmade by Adults with Disabilities

Everyone wants to live a full life, even people with developmental disabilities. Unfortunately, people with developmental disabilities are the largest under-employed group of people. And even though they may work at a slower pace and need modifications and extra support to perform their jobs, they are the most loyal workers and persist when others would just give up.

Big Bead Jewelry was formed to provide jobs for young adults with developmental disabilities. It was started by a mom who wanted her daughter to have a job she loves. We've expanded to include a friend who also has disabilities. We have a lot of fun making jewelry and hope you enjoy looking at our necklaces and bracelets (mom makes the earrings and provides finishing touches to the necklaces). And we hope to meet you some day at a Chicago-area craft fair!

Big Bead Jewelry features jewelry handmade by young adults with developmental disabilities. We call this endeavor "Big Bead Jewelry" because we initially thought the individuals would only be able to work with bigger beads due to their cognitive disabilities and fine motor delays. However, we've been able to branch out and build skills working with smaller beads and include tasks such as tying knots and measuring. Big Bead Jewelry exists to provide jobs for disabled adults who need extra supports due to cognitive disabilities and medical conditions such as epilepsy. The beaders love their jobs! Operational support is provided by AccuVis, a small business in Naperville IL.
