Builders of Fine Houses!

I have always wanted to be an artist, I love doing so many things; painting, carving, woodworking, etc. When Steve and I met, I told him I wanted to create items and sell them at the local fairs. We were hiking on a trail and talking about our dreams when I told him this and he said that sounded good to him. Steve hadn't worked with wood much so this was a learning adventure for both of us and as it turns out it was a natural fit for us.

In 1997 we were driving back from a town about 60 miles from our hometown when Steve pulled over and asked me to drive. He then told me that he couldn't see very well and everything looked dark (this was in the broad daylight). When we got home he said it was okay, everything was back to normal. The next day we both went to work and when I came home for lunch there was a message that Steve had to go to the eye doctor, he was having problems seeing again. Turns out he lost his sight completely in that week. We went to an eye specialist in Portland, Oregon and he said Steve would gain back a small portion of his sight but he would be legally blind the rest of his life. So, we went searching for a white cane so that he could walk around town and found "The Oregon Commission for the Blind", They sent an counselor over to find out what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, he thought he'd be smart and said that he wanted to be a woodworker, they were smarter and said okay. They trained him to work slow and carefully, and he does.

Most people would have given up, but not Steve, he's a doer; he still had his life and he is going to live it to the fullest. He started building some of the craziest birdhouses, they were fun; leaning this way or that way, straight up and down. People would ask us to do replicas of their houses or friends’ houses and off he'd go. Steve doesn't build with plans, what he builds he comes up with in his mind and they turn out wonderfully.

We have become environmentally friendly in that we use only low voc, paints which do not hurt the air we breathe and the wood we use is from a local mill. We are trying to build more birdhouses with clean outs but on some designs it just isn't possible. We don't do as many special orders of replicas anymore because Steve's eyesight has worsened and he just cannot see the details like he used to. But, if you want an unusual, one of a kind, usable, unique, well-crafted birdhouse, we have one for you.

Steve's grandmother wrote us after learning we were building birdhouses and told us that we would be great builders of fine houses, that has been our motto ever since. She was 104 years old when she said that so we think she must have known what a fine builder was by that time.
