About

Decorating with antiques: inspiration from the past

I have always loved antiques and have spent many weekends combing through crowded shelves in tiny out-of-the-way shops and antique malls searching for pieces to bring back home. Fueled by episodes of Antiques Roadshow, my treasure hunting expeditions also included stops at charity and consignment shops. As time went on, I got hooked on the hectic excitement of estate and barn sales - you never know what hidden gems may be inside!

I learned a lot from those experiences, and after moving to the UK, had fun checking out antiques fairs, car boot sales and auctions in and around the home counties. My interest in history and antiques dovetailed while I was living there, and a large part of my free time was spent soaking up the atmosphere of European stately homes and palaces, as well as fabulous museums like Sir John Soane's wonderful house in London.

After moving back to the States, I pursued my interest in antiques with a fresh perspective, slowly but surely adding to the pieces I found in Europe. Friends began asking me where I was sourcing pieces, and requesting that I look for certain things for them while I was out treasure hunting. One thing led to another, and as my inventory grew, I decided it was time to make things official and open up shop. After extensive research, I established an online home for Birney Creek here on Etsy, and haven't looked back since.

The inspiration behind my shop lies in real places like Isabella Stuart Gardner's Boston palazzo 'Fenway Court' as well as locations like Downton Abbey, fictional seat of PBS' aristocratic Crawley family: homes filled to the brim with fascinating and beautiful pieces. Birney Creek carries a little of everything from European and Asian antiques to mid century modern vintage and beyond. All of my pieces have one thing in common - they are well crafted and full of character.

Birney Creek reflects my belief that antiques and vintage items have a history behind them, and provide their new owners with a tangible link to the past. As collectors, we choose to accent our homes with pieces that speak to us in meaningful ways, creating one-of-a-kind personalized environments which can't be found in a catalogue.

We spend a lifetime gathering these cherished pieces, carefully selecting decorative accents which give our surroundings a special touch that reveals a little of our personalities. In effect, we curate our own galleries by transforming generic living space into homes that reflect what is important to us: historical eras we have an interest in, places we have been or dream of visiting someday, or simply an admiration of fine craftsmanship and artistry.

Birney Creek specializes in fine antiques and quality vintage collectibles sourced from estate sales, auctions, antique fairs, and tag sales. I buy the types of things that I would love to have in my own home - beautiful objects that embody timeless design along with a high standard of craftsmanship not often found in today's pieces. I enjoy nothing more than wandering around searching for that special something that piques my interest, and invite you to do just that here in my shop. Happy hunting!

Cheers,
Cindy
