Announcement   These scarves, pins, and graphics are part of my artistic practice of looking, gathering, processing, and transforming. Many pieces are a part of my ongoing series called the #FemalePowerProject. This is an exploration of the lives and attributes of remarkable females, real and mythological. More Female Power shawls and scarves will be up here soon! There is something amazing about wrapping oneself in an artwork...

The textiles in this shop are designed, printed, and finished in the USA. The pins are handmade by me, Leda Black. Prints are made in the studio on my high resolution Epson printer.

My fine art can be found in my other Etsy shop, LedaBlackFineArt. You can follow me on Facebook at facebook.com/BlackLab and on Instagram and Twitter @LedaBlackArtist. Also, check out my artist's blog at LedaBlack.com. You can read about amazing females there: Malala Yousafzai, Maya Angelou, Harriet Tubman, Erzulie, Marie Curie.

About

Textile Accessories from Original Fine Art Photography and Digital Design

It started when one of my Arts Walk neighbors came into my studio, Black Lab, and upon seeing one of my photo-digital mashups hanging there, said, "Now THAT would look good on a scarf!" Since then I have made prototypes and tested vendors until I have come up with a number of scarves and shawls that have finally satisfied me.

I sell my fine art on Etsy at LedaBlackFineArt. These scarves are also part of this artistic practice: The Science of the Particular—the close examination of individual things, outside of a search for general principles. In my art I privilege this quiddity by capturing and enlarging on details using photo-digital imaging. General principles arise by themselves and of themselves.

It is possible now to make small print runs from digital images onto fabrics. The technology allows for highly detailed photographic imagery printed in large panels instead of in smaller repeat patterns.

All these pieces are printed & sewn in the USA. As I honor the trees that lend themselves to my designs, I also honor the relationships between people and the things they make. I have a relationship with the printers of these works and I know personally the woman who helps me sew them. I sew them and bead them with my hands as well. This adds a monetary cost to these scarves, but it saves in other ways. Because although a particular thing is essentially itself, paradoxically it is also connected to everything else.

Production partners

  • An expert digital textile printing company

    Monroe, NC

I love working with my printer in North Carolina. They can produce very small runs at a reasonable price and turnaround time. I also find their color controls outstanding. And they offer the sheer and lightweight fabric I love.

  • Another expert digital textile printer

    NC, United States

This printer does very fine work on non-sheer fabrics. We use them to do the printing on our organic cotton scarves and mufflers.
