Black Lamb BK is the creation of Rachele Rouquié, a Brooklyn based artist.
Born in NYC, Rachele moved up the East Coast, living in CT and Boston until returning to Brooklyn, NY in 2008. Her work is inspired by nature, literature, and the awesome power of rock and roll with the greatest influences including David Attenborough’s nature films, The Halls of Peoples at the American Museum of Natural History, The Weetzie Bat books by Francesca Lia Block, the music of Björk, Bruce Springsteen, Iron Maiden, and Manowar, and classic children’s literature such as Pippi Longstocking, Peter Pan, and the Little House books.
"I make cut paper collaged and printed handmade greeting cards and stationery from my own drawings, sketches, and photos. The process for my work can begin anywhere! I carry a notebook around to jot down little sketches or simple phrases whenever an idea hits. A trip to a museum, a delicious meal, or a walk in the park can start 10 new cards! The beauty of working with paper is that I can try out any idea and not feel too horrible if it ends up in the recycling bin instead of in my shop.
My technique for my handmade cards comes from a love of texture and collage. I sketch out what the final image will be and then experiment with color and cutting to decide what the simplest and most attractive shapes and cuts will translate to paper what I have in my minds eye. This requires me to think in a few dimensions at once and can take anywhere from a few minutes, to a few months. Once I've come up with a sample I'm happy with, I usually cut all the pieces for 20+ cards so that I can get into 'factory mode' later and make a one man assembly line.
All my work is designed and created in a low ceilinged basement in my apartment in Crown Heights, BK lined floor to ceiling with paper, pens, fabric scraps, seashells, beads, and other findings.
Since returning to NYC, I have sold my work here on Etsy and IRL at Artists & Fleas (Williamsburg and Chelsea), Shwick, Hester St Fair, Brooklyn Night Bazaar, Astoria Market, and BUST Craftaculars.
