About

BLACK MOON MADE

Black Moon Made is the work and play of me, Chelcie Blackmun. I am an artist, learning herbalist, witch and wannabe psychedelic priestess.

When making art I draw, paint, print, and tattoo with seasonal forays into fiber crafts like knitting. (I also work as a graphic designer to pay the bills.) I love making art and images as food for the soul and psyche, as ritual markers, and as articulations of insights uncovered. I find great satisfaction in making items of practical use and am inspired by folk art + craft traditions. Knowing that an object will serve a purpose in addition to being well crafted and beautiful sets my heart at ease. Whenever possible, I try to reuse and repurpose materials when making. Waste sucks. (Plus, foraging for supplies at the thrift store is my fave!)

I like to call myself an herbalist vulgaris - vulgaris is a Latin word meaning "common" or "of the common people", it is found in the botanical names of many weedy and useful plants. I am a common home herbalist -- I care for myself and my loved ones, usually with only a small surplus to offer my larger community. I have studied in the Wise Woman tradition and hold nourishment, flexibility, respect, and simplicity as the pillars of my herbcraft. I work with plants that are close to me, that I live with and have developed relationship with. My potion ingredients are gathered by gardening, wildcrafting, and through responsible local herb sellers.

Both art-making and plant magic are spiritual practices for me. Herblore, wild creatures, and european folk traditions are my teachers and inspiration -- the art making then is an act of devotion. Together, they are my ritual magic and worship of the natural world. It’s a practice where mundane everyday routines of nourishment, observation, and expression become sacred. Silliness, celebration, and irreverence are critical parts of this mundane sacredness too!

Thanks for checking my policies! As is the Etsy way, I hand make/stitch/print each item in my shop so please expect some natural variation from one piece to the next. Homemade herbal products may differ somewhat from their commercial counterparts, this is why we love them. :)

Remember that homemade herbal products have a shelf life - they are made with food quality ingredients and only natural preservatives like beeswax, essential oil, and/or alcohol. I recommend using most products up within 6 months to 1 year of when they were made, though the products may very well last much longer than this. Use your senses to observe any changes in the product over time. If it looks, smells and tastes like it did when you first received it, it's probably still good to use. If for some reason a product spoils soon after you receive it please let me know so I can set things right for you and in future batches of the product.

Balms and salves may melt when kept in a warm location (hot car, warm pockets, etc) please keep this in mind when storing them.

Some items will wear and change over time in a way that is natural and unique. Particularly in fabric items, unfinished ends may ruffle and colors may fade as you wash and wear. This is natural and part of what we love about the handmade! If for some reason an item falls apart under normal conditions please contact me and I'll set things right.

Any information given here about herbal properties and actions is meant for educational purposes only. It is not meant as a prescription or to diagnose, prevent or treat disease. If you are ill please see a doctor. If you are pregnant, lactating, or taking medication please consult your doctor before using herbal products.
