About

A self-taught nuno felter

I got started felting in about '07 making little baubles for my knit purses, then started seeing nuno felting pictures online and was so captivated, I began that with great fervor, and am still at it!
It was very compelling because it is a relatively new fiber art (started in the '90's) so the creations are 'groundbreaking,' as in, there are still a lot of 'new' designs to make that have never been done by anyone before.

The process is a long one, and takes up quite a bit of space. First a fabric is laid out, I always use 100% silk chiffon, then layers of wool, silk roving, art yarns and other fiber embellishments are added.
Most of my pieces are two-sided so that means it gets flipped and done all over again. Double the work of one sided pieces, but I dislike a scarf having a "wrong" side so I go the extra mile.
After the design is laid out, it is wet down with soapy water and rolled in plastic anywhere between an 1.5-2 hours depending on the size.
After that, it is scrubbed with hot water and agitated by hand in the sink. It also usually gets thrown hard at the bottom of the sink for more shrinkage and therefore more texture. Then it is rinsed and dried flat.
If I feel it is not shrunken down enough, I will allow it to dry overnight, and then return it to the hot soapy water the next day for more shrinkage and texture.
It is quite labor intensive, and time consuming, but the end product is so worthwhile.
Overall, I put in at least 6 hours per piece. Sometimes over the course of a week, or sometimes in only a day or two.

I found that quite a lot of people wanted to learn this process, so I started teaching classes in my home, then eventually wrote an eBook on it (also for sale in my shop) for people who like to teach themselves. I also have an entire website (feltinglessons.com) devoted to beginning wet felting, felting around a resist, and nuno felting. All the videos are free for anyone to learn this fun and freeform art in fiber.
If this interests you, I encourage you to try it! If you can't find a class near you, try getting my (or anyone's) book, look at blogs and YouTube videos and just jump right in! You'll be so glad you did!
