About

Tell Your Feet the Cold War is Over!

I was born and raised in the small town of Pazardjik, Bulgaria. Throughout my childhood I helped my grandparents with their farm in Patalenitsa, a nearby village with dirt roads and no modern industry. After high school, I went to study in Middlebury, Vermont, and my grandmother sent me off with a big package of her famous knitwear.

I gave some away as presents to my new American friends, and pretty soon my grandma was knitting for everyone I knew. When I came back home, I realized this knitting tradition could increase the living standard in Patalenitsa and keep people warm and comfortable no matter where they lived.

The women of Patalenitsa handknit every pair of Bloc Socks out of organic, local wool. The sheep live in the women's backyards, and the knitting patterns have been passed down through their families for centuries.

The Bloc Socks project will establish a community knitting center in Patalenitsa where the women can meet up, share their patterns, and knit together. We will organize after-school programs at the center so children can learn how to knit and keep the tradition alive.
