Magnificent piece of art glass--small but beautifully detailed. Convincing whales are hard to find--getting the scale, natural variations in coloring, and sculpting the body shape to convey majestic size and poetry in motion are not to be found in most tree ornament whales. But this piece uses silver to give rich coloration to the dark glass of the whale's body. Multicolored bubbles of glass on the head and jaw suggest the barnacles that adorn all humpbacks. Body posture is beautifully arched conveying a humpback in motion. Altogether a stunning glass sculpture which will have an honored place on my all-animal tree for years to come. Expensive, but unique. A real piece of art. So worth it! Highly recommended!!!
The oldest of three daughters, selling her dad's glass, trying not to take life too seriously...
This shop is the collaboration between master glass artist Paul Labrie and his tech-savvy daughter Caitlin. She's the oldest of three girls and her married last name is Elder (Eldest Daughter Glass, get it? Hardy har har).
Paul has been creating art since before Caitlin was born, and Caitlin has been selling it at art and craft shows since before she was born too! Once she left the womb, her sales-savvy increased with each year. Honestly, who could resist a salesperson with big blue eyes and a winning smile? Especially when that sales person was only 5 and could explain, with ease, exactly what glassblowing and lampworking are?
Paul had an unbeatable sales-daughter whom he could pay with room and board, and Caitlin got to do what oldest children do best: be the boss. With the advent of internet consumers, it was only logical that they continue this symbiotic relationship on Etsy. Not to mention, Paul doesn't really like computers and Caitlin is practically wired to one. So, Paul makes the glass, and Caitlin sells it.
Many years have passed since the summers of arts and craft shows, but one thing hasn’t changed: the integrity and beauty with which Paul Labrie captures the natural world. His beginnings as a scientific glass blower are evident in his symmetrical lathe work. His passion for nature is apparent in his strikingly accurate depiction of animals, and the sense of humor his family knows and loves shines through his whimsical pieces.
Enjoy! And don’t be afraid to convo with us. We try not to take ourselves too seriously.
Owner, Marketer, Photographer
Cait owns the shop! She also types the words and takes the pictures all while chasing her kiddos. Paul is her Dad, she's the oldest of 3 girls, and her childhood was anything but boring. Seriously, how many people can say their dad is a glassblower?
Glass Blower, Wiseacre
Paul creates the beautiful glass art sold by Eldest Daughter Glass. A scientific glassblower, transformed by the last 33 years, is now the self-taught, premiere artist you see today. His wife and 3 daughters may have contributed to that change too...
