The Jar Explained

I left my desk job in March of 2013, because I was in the flurry of planning my daughter's wedding, and I was growing weary of producing canned, computer art. My longing to return to low-tech, hand-drawn art drove me to open a shop on Etsy in July of 2013.

I designed some artwork for my daughter's wedding revolving around her love of antique, blue-glass canning jars. After the wedding was over, I decided to name my new business Blu Jar Studio as a reminder of the big day. I also believe in the beauty of common things, and nothing is more ordinary than a glass jar.

What speaks to me more than crystal vases or fussy, porcelain bowls is a row of Mason jars in use on a shelf. In the past, canning jars were only used to store the summer harvest, but now they are used as decorations and as beautiful storage pieces. This makes me happy!

My painting is the Mason jar of the art world: unfussy and uncomplicated. I try to create little pieces of the world as I would like it to be, a world where the jar that held pickles yesterday might hold anything today. I live with my canning jars. I use them to store all sorts of things--some behind cabinet doors and some in plain view. They are friends.

I hope my artwork fits in your home as easily as a friend sitting at your kitchen table, drinking a pint of lemonade from a Mason jar.

I call myself a decades-old, budding artist because I will always feel like I am new to the world of art. I realize anew every day that there is more ahead to be learned than there are things already learned behind me. So, let's begin again today!

I have a short philosophy of art: it must be FUN, ACCESSIBLE, and LIVABLE. I think art should put a smile on your face, without emptying your wallet, and it should fit perfectly into your life and home.

Most of my artwork is small original paintings. Soon I hope to offer prints of larger pieces and cards suitable for framing.

There’s nothing fancy here—just common things that are elevated to the uncommon by a little ink and watercolor.

I love to include words in my artwork, because I think they’re beautiful, too. If you see something of mine that you like, but you’d like it even more without the words, let me know. I’m sure we can work something out.
