About

Making the unaffordable affordable

I've been making 'something' since I was 5, but you don't want to hear about all that! I luckily had practical parents with a ‘can do’ attitude.

What about now, how did I get to now?!

In a nutshell? I got bored at a quiet craft fair. I was running a stall for someone else, and had nothing to do. Everyone around me was making something, I didn't 'make'. So I changed that and started making simple bead jewellery. That was way back when in the last century.

If jewellery was work, then I needed a hobby. A book on Shibori dyeing allowed me to splash dye around with no one tell me I was doing it wrong – deep joy. Now I had both textiles and jewellery to make and sell. And no hobby!

Long walks along beautiful beaches, collecting sea glass, can I make jewellery from this? Yes I can – if walking along a beach, with the sun on my back and only the cry of the gulls for company constitutes a day at work, then that’s the job for me! Sea glass jewellery it would be.

Collaborative work with another artist led to rolls of velvet moving in – she had the know-how, I had the sewing machine. She moved onto other things and I camped out in the library reading anything I could on devoré and decolouring techniques on velvet. By now it was clear I could not do all this in the kitchen – if nothing else it’s too easy to stir the dye spoon in the pasta, so I decamped outside to a garden studio. And then another studio. I’ve had to stop at two – no garden left!

Knowing I would try my hand at most things arty, friends asked me to make up the numbers for a glass bead making day. Four of us sat down to see what this was all about, two of us then signed up for the short course and only one of us, me, actually settled down to make beads. There are more colours of commercial glass than sea glass. And sitting over a hot flame is warmer than a windy beach in winter. That’s my excuse.

And, with my love of keeping warm, I decided, with a heavy heart, that rising fabric costs and competition from cheap imports flooding even the 'handmade' market, I would, for now, discontinue getting dye everywhere. Now I had spare space which I needed to fill. Not for long! I had wanted to try fusing glass for a while but my little kiln limits what I can do, so when a kiln was offered for the right price (ignore size, what has that to do with it?) I bought it, then some glass and started working with glass sheets instead of rods. We named her Delilah (after the Tom Jones song), she disliked the long car journey home and died, thankfully we managed to resurrect her but she has her 'moments' of non-co-operation.

So, that’s it in a nutshell. I work with sea glass, glass rods and sheets to make jewellery, beads and home accessories. Have a look in my shop and see what takes your fancy.

Please be aware that PayPal e-cheques can take up to 14 working days to clear.
No items will be despatched before cleared payment is received.

The price of your item is shown in the relevant listing and in the checkout page. This price is inclusive of VAT but exclusive of delivery costs (unless specifically advised separately). The cost of delivery will be shown on the checkout page or invoice and includes both postage and packaging costs.

You, the buyer are responsible for any fees, taxes and charges that may be levied on importing into your country. Please check your country’s own policy regarding imports before ordering if you are unsure.
Shipping
All ready made items will (unless specifically advised and agreed with you) will be dispatched within 1-3 working days of payment clearing. Made to order items will be despatched within the time scale given in the listing.

Delivery may be affected by postal service delays, which are unfortunately outside of my control. This includes but is not exclusively limited to delays caused by extreme weather, 'acts of God', industrial disputes and delays I have no control over. Late delivery of your order will not amount to a breach of the purchase/sale contract unless both you and I have agreed otherwise in advance in writing.

Please note, at times of the year deliveries from the UK to non-EU countries can take over 4 weeks and at times to US & Canada destinations in excess of 6 weeks as I understand more parcels from the EU are being stopped and checked by import Customs. I have no control over this.

Unexpected non-delivery of item(s) should be reported to me within 30 days, allowing enough time for delivery and enquiries to be made of Royal Mail and international delivery services.

Items returned through non-delivery to an address or non-collection from a postal depot will incur a redelivery charge. If the carrier charges any fees for returning, these will either be payable by you before re-despatching or deducted from any refund.

I ship worldwide. You, the buyer are responsible for any fees, taxes and charges that may be levied on importing into your country. Please check your country’s own policy regarding imports before ordering if you are unsure.

My delivery charge covers both postage and packaging costs. Tracked shipping is an optional extra on all deliveries and I recommend this if you wish for peace of mind when wanting to know where your parcel is. Without tracking there will be no way of knowing how far your parcel has moved through the delivery process.

Privacy
This Privacy Policy describes how and when I collect, use, and share information when you purchase an item from me, contact me, or otherwise use my services through Etsy.com or its related sites and services.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to the practices of third parties that I do not own or control, including Etsy or any third party services you access through Etsy. You can read Etsy’s Privacy Policy here - https://www.etsy.com/uk/legal/privacy

1. Information I Collect
To fulfil your order, you must provide me with certain information (which you authorised Etsy to provide to me), such as your name, email address, postal address, payment information, and the details of the product that you’re ordering. You may also choose to provide me with additional personal information (for a custom order of jewellery, for example), if you contact me directly.

2. The Legal Base for Information Collection
The General Data Protection Regulations (May 2018) (EU) (known as GDPR 2018 throughout the rest of this Policy) requires that I explain the legal bases I rely on to collect, use, and share your personal information. This may include a buyer’s affirmative consent to receive marketing messages, compliance with legal obligations, and a seller’s use of the personal information in their legitimate interests (improving their services, for example). Throughout this privacy policy, I will explain where and why I rely on these different legal bases

Why I Need Your Information and How I Use It

I rely on a number of legal bases to collect, use, and share your information, including:
• as needed to provide my services, such as when I use your information to fulfil your order, to settle disputes, or to provide customer support;
• when you have provided your affirmative consent, which you may revoke at any time, such as by signing up for my mailing list;
• if necessary to comply with a legal obligation or court order or in connection with a legal claim, such as retaining information about your purchases if required by tax law; and
• as necessary for the purpose of my legitimate interests, if those legitimate interests are not overridden by your rights or interests, such as
o 1) Providing and improving my services. I use your information to provide the services you requested and in my legitimate interest to improve my services; and
o 2) Compliance with the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use. I use your information as necessary to comply with my obligations under the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use.

3. Information Sharing and Disclosure
The GDPR (2018) requires that I disclose the details of any personal information I share with third parties.

Information about my customers is important to my business. I share your personal information for very limited reasons and in limited circumstances, as follows:
• Etsy. I share information with Etsy as necessary to provide you my services and comply with my obligations under both the Etsy Seller Policy and Etsy Terms of Use.
• Service providers. I engage certain trusted third parties to perform functions and provide services to my shop, such as delivery companies. I will share your personal information with these third parties, but only to the extent necessary to perform these services.
• Business transfers. If I sell or merge my business, I may disclose your information as part of that transaction, only to the extent permitted by law.
• Compliance with laws. I may collect, use, retain, and share your information if I have a good faith belief that it is reasonably necessary to:
o (a) respond to legal process or to government requests;
o (b) enforce my agreements, terms and policies;
o (c) prevent, investigate, and address fraud and other illegal activity, security, or technical issues; or
o (d) protect the rights, property, and safety of my customers, or others.

4. Data Retention – the length of time I keep personal information
The GDPR (2018) requires me to disclose the period of time during which I will store personal information.

I retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide you with my services and as described in my Privacy Policy. However, I may also be required to retain this information to comply with my legal and regulatory obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce my agreements. Your personal information will be retained for a minimum period of 1 year following consent / purchase date, and for a maximum period of 7 years following consent / purchase date.

5. Transfers of Personal Information Outside the EU
GDPR (2018) requires me to disclose if you transfer personal information outside of the EU and the legal bases you rely on to do so, such as consent and contractual necessity.
I have offices and facilities in the United Kingdom. My hosting facilities for my email are situated in the United Kingdom. The only circumstance in which I would transfer personal information out of the European Union would be for delivery purposes through trustworthy services such as Royal Mail or similar postal services. As stated at the top of this document, this Privacy Policy does not apply to the practices of third parties that I do not own or control, including Etsy or any third party services you access through Etsy.

6. Your Rights regarding my use of your personal information and my contact details
If you reside in certain territories, including the EU, you have a number of rights in relation to your personal information. While some of these rights apply generally, certain rights apply only in certain limited cases. I describe these rights below:
• Access. You may have the right to access and receive a copy of the personal information I hold about you by contacting me using the contact information below.
• Change, restrict, delete. You may also have rights to change, restrict my use of, or delete your personal information. Absent exceptional circumstances (like where I am required to store data for legal reasons) I will generally delete your personal information upon request.
• Object. You can object to (i) my processing of some of your information based on my legitimate interests and (ii) receiving marketing messages from me after providing your express consent to receive them. In such cases, I will delete your personal information unless I have compelling and legitimate grounds to continue using that information or if it is needed for legal reasons.
• Complain. If you reside in the EU and wish to raise a concern about my use of your information (and without prejudice to any other rights you may have), you have the right to do so with your local data protection authority.

How to Contact Me
For purposes of EU data protection law, I, Sue Harris, am the data controller of your personal information which you supplied when you have contacted me or purchased from me. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact me at sue.harris [!at] blueboxstudio.co.uk.
I am not the data controller for any other Etsy shop – If you wish to access, correct or delete personal information held by Etsy or another shop please contact that shop or Etsy directly for assistance. If a customer contacts me to access, correct or delete personal information held by Etsy, I will request that the customer send a request directly to Etsy.
