About

Exploring Maps and History with Prints on Paper

Blue Monocle is a specialty print shop with a focus on making fine print reproductions of antique maps, printed on 100% cotton, acid-free fine art paper with archival pigment inks. I'm dedicated to the art of printmaking, and every item I print is made of only the highest quality materials.

This shop is a happy combination of three of my passions: maps, history, and prints on paper. I love old maps because they are truly windows onto history, showing paths of exploration, scientific discovery, developing and changing societies, and more. They also connect us to the places that are most important to us: our towns, our ancestry, and our common heritage. Plus, many of them are beautiful works of art in their own right.

I started Blue Monocle in 2008 as a way to explore history through antique maps, and with a desire to perfect the art of fine prints on paper. Over the years I've had the privilege to make prints for numerous museums, universities, and television and movie productions, and my prints have been featured in InStyle Magazine and displayed on the set of The Martha Stewart Show.

All of the images I print have been lovingly restored, and I make all of the prints on a large-format digital fine art printer (a process sometimes called "giclee") using archival pigment inks and 100% cotton matte fine art papers. I'm always on the lookout for beautiful and interesting old maps, and I regularly add new items to the collection. I'm also happy to customize any of the prints in any way, just drop me a line to describe what you'd like.

If you have any questions or comments about my products, please let me know, I'd love to hear from you!

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalized orders

I'm happy to customize the appearance of any of the prints in my shop. If you'd like to change the print size, the border size, or the color and tone, or if you would like any other customizations (like adding custom text), please contact me to set up a custom order.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Gift messaging is available for all items in my shop. Please include a note to me during checkout that the order is a gift, and include any text you'd like to appear on a card. I'll print and include a small note card with your message for free.

For orders that you specify as a gift, I'll include a gift invoice in the package that omits all pricing information.

Unfortunately, gift wrapping is not available.

Framing Your Print

All prints come unframed. For best protection when framing, use all acid-free materials and choose glass or acrylic with UV filtering. It’s best not to hang your print where it will be exposed to direct sunlight. For the widest range of options, take your print to a local frame shop for a custom frame. Most frame shops have a large selection of mats and frames, and will be able to size the materials exactly as you like. If your print is in a standard size, another option is to purchase an off-the-shelf, standard-size frame at an art supply store in your area. Most art supply stores stock a wide range of ready-made frames. There are also many online frame shops that sell high quality frames. Feel free to contact me for recommendations.
