About

The Lives of Things

Blue Onion Curios is a collection in progress- the result of ongoing travels in the world of antiques and vintage ephemera. Museums, estate sales, auctions houses, and eclectic antique shops are my favorite places. I have advanced degrees in design and art history and have worked in galleries for years. I am drawn to things and the stories they tell about the time in which they were created and the people who have owned and used them.

Blue Onion Curios was named in homage to the blue onion pattern created by Meissen porcelain in the 17th century. The pattern was inspired by Chinese blue and white porcelain and through Meissen went on to spark thousands of similar decorative motifs by European porcelain manufacturers for centuries. "Onion" in the 17th century German sense referred to any flower bulb. The shop was named with this multifaceted, cross-cultural history in mind. The collection focus is on interesting, charming objects, best characterized as curios.

I find the whole process-- finding objects, researching, photographing, and describing them-- creative and therefore exciting. Even preparing items for shipping has expressive potential. When I wrap a piece I use materials and colors that are in line with the character of the object, while keeping within the shop's aesthetic. Because each piece is so special, I want you to be as excited about receiving your package as I am about sending it to you.
Here is some customer feedback:

"AMAZING gift wrapping. Speedy, and a great price for my purchase, too. Will be back!"

"Gorgeous bag lovingly wrapped & packaged. Fantastic seller! Thanks so much!!"

"So wonderfully packaged. Love this shop and the beautiful English pitcher!"
