Beautiful shape and proportions. Easy to drink from and holds a goodly amount of coffee. Excellent. Came very well packaged.

My mug has arrived and I couldn't be happier! I have been looking for a mug this shape and size for years, having broken a well loved mug. I visited dozens of pottery exhibits and stores without any luck. Now I am waiting for John Spiteri to have some more teapots on his website to replace the one you cat broke.

About

What this is all about

I have a very high regard for high quality handmade goods. The machine aesthetic has so subverted our consciousness, that it is sometimes challenging to supplant it with an appreciation of fine craft. When asked if I think what I do is art, I often respond that I hope I bring a little artistry to what I make.

I've been making pottery since 1968. First here in the Chicago area, then for about 14 years in Colorado. I learned my craft mostly from contact with some fine craftsman.

Shop policies

I am interested in making pottery that is used in our daily lives for the serving of food and the celebration of meals together, for our solitary enjoyment of tea, coffee, or wine, or simply for the purpose of enhancing our kitchen tables. I believe that a functional pot's existence is completed in the process of using it. Until a bowl is filled with food and set on a table for the first time it is only an object, perhaps a beautiful one, but a solitary and incomplete one nonetheless. It is when that object is taken in our hands and put to some purpose that its existence is fully justified. The more we continue to use a piece of pottery, the more it imprints itself upon us. A platter, or bowl, or mug, or plate is transformed by our use of it. A pitchers color, its texture and weight, its heft are changed in this way into something that is both humble and extraordinary. It is this that keeps me fresh and working day after day. I try to discover where and how an object becomes worthy of being offered as a part of someone's life.

I hope you enjoy what you find here. If you have any questions, please let me know.

But since these goods are hand made, there will be slight variations. To me, that's the nature of handmade as opposed to repetitive, lifeless, sterile machine made goods.

Additional policies and FAQs
Handmade is the exact opposite of machine made goods. While I take great care in working with clay, there will be anomalies in some of the pieces, especially with stoneware: the occasional bit of material suspended in the glaze, slight variations in glaze application and color. But if you find something you do not like, contact me and I will try to accommodate you.

Due to the nature of photography and on-line display, there may be slight variations in color between what you see on the screen and what you see when you open the box.

In my view, the art objects I collect gain in visual and tactile value the more I use them and have them in my life. I hope it is the same for you.

Custom Orders: I will accept custom orders for purchases of $75.00 or more, for items relating to the preparation, serving, and storage of food and the display of flowers. Colors are limited to those currently on view on my Etsy Shop. Custom orders will be shipped when ready, usually 3 to 5 weeks and require a 25% deposit. Custom orders may require a pricing increase, depending on the item and season.s
